After all these big discussions on WotC's failed roll-out/evil conspiracy....GSL from hell editon wars, I have asked myself as a DM and even my players, just exactly how much do we need adjudicated for us? Here are my thoughts; see, as we advance in level using 3.5, we find that the game gets more complicated, true with every edition, but more so with 3.5. Prep time has increased exponentially. Ok, I am not opening the door here to hear about how 4e is better and has an oldschool feel. Oldschool is 1e plain and simple, so dont even post that goboldy-goober here. I am looking for anyone on these boards who has played 3.5 and then went back to 1e. How did the players feel about it? How have you captured the new excitement of custom characters while using the 1e rules? My biggest concern is that an 5th level archer (fighter) can go over an pick up the 5th level axeman's (fighter) axe and fair just as well with it. The same character classes, of the same level, in my experience just seem to be the same. Played by different players with style, yes they are different, but on the inside deep, they arent any different. How did you deal with that, and how did it go? has anyone gone back and not like it? I want some ideas. I am toying with an idea here. I want that oldschol feel and aquick prep time and a faster-playing game.
