What is the Living Dungeon?
The Living Dungeon is a Play-by-Post Dungeons & Dragons campaign begun in 2003 by the members of the Necromancer Games Messageboards. Founding DMs included dragonmajesty, tsar riga, D Nychus, Fortinbras, Dave Biggins, and nospeed1981, assisted by Damien the Bloodfeaster and skeetyrbug, among others. The intention was to create a living campaign world in which multiple parties could adventure, interact, and affect each other and the world around them through the collaboration of their Dungeon Masters. In the last five years, the campaign has seen two messageboard hosts, one massive technological failure, two editions of the game, ten Dungeon Masters, and dozens of players and characters. As of 2008, dragonmajesty and other DMs have relaunched the campaign as Living Dungeon v2.0.
What is Play-by-Post gaming?
Play-by-Post gaming (or PbP) is a messageboard-based roleplaying game format. Players post the actions of their characters in messageboard threads created by their Dungeon Masters, who then resolve and post the results of the character actions and advance the story. Posting is split between In Character (IC) and Out of Character (OoC) threads; each active adventuring party typically has one of each type of thread to post in at a given time. Character sheets are hosted in the adjacent Living Dungeon Characters forum for easy reference during play. PbP gaming is characterized by a slower pace and a greater reliance on descriptive text than tabletop gaming. A typical combat encounter could take weeks or more to resolve, depending on the posting frequency of the players and the availability of the DM. For some, the pace is frustratingly slow, but the flexibility and versatility of the PbP format makes it an ideal gaming option for many.
How do I join a game?
If you are interested in joining the Living Dungeon campaign as a player, then follow these steps:
1. Post your interest in this thread. If your email address is not listed on your public profile, then please put it in your post (spamproofing it is fine) for contact purposes.
2. Design a potential character complete with backstory. Use the character creation rules from the Living Dungeon v2.0 Player's Handbook thread.
You can find setting information in the Living Dungeon v2.0 Gazetteer and Index thread. Then edit your reply in this thread and post your potential
PC for everyone to examine. Eventually, your character will find a permanent home in the Living Dungeon Characters Forum.
3. Go talk to the groups that need players. Check the Living Dungeon v2.0 Party Rosters thread to see which parties are currently accepting new members. First, read up on the games by looking at the current In Character and Out of Character threads. Then, when you have found one you are interested in, and have learned a little about it, post in the group's OOC thread. Talk to the players and Dungeon Master, get to know them a little, and offer your PC as a possible party member. The group and DM may ask you to make slight changes to your PC, or they may ask you to design something else entirely (in the case where your PC is incompatible with the group, but they like you as a player and potential group member).
4. Get accepted. The Dungeon Master of the group you are trying to enter will notify you when you get approval. But once he gives it, you are in.
5. Have fun playing D&D!
