The fiery orb ascended into the sky and cast its warm glow across the City of the Learned, the people milling about their day like worker ants transporting sticks and leaves. A deep red churned at the lower edge of the sun, as if something even more combustible and dangerous burned in the lower furnace of its fire this day, a harbinger of impending doom. The High Precepts Calishon, Nouveau, and Shaw met the Covenant at the Monastery of the Inner Flame that morning, providing the party with some additional gear. "We have grave news," said Calishon. "Last night, when the Great Chamber was empty, the pendulum from the gigantic chroniker somehow broke, and crashed into the oversized hourglass it sits behind. At this point we know not how this could have transpired. No doubt this is a bad omen, and an inauspicious way to begin your journey." Frimble and Edana both appeared horrifed and stepped off to speak more with Calishon and Nouveau in hushed voices. Shaw, on the other hand, pulled Ameane aside. The young priest with red hair leaned in and whispered, You cannot trust all of Calishons words...beware; and may Lorune be with you. Shaw gave her a stern look, and then turned and walked away, rejoining the other priests. Unfortunately, Ameane never got another private moment to inquire further of Shaw. The Most Holy bid them farewell and returned to the Grand Cathedral. So the troupe gathered their gear and marched past the irrigated fields at city's edge, and into the surrounding desertthe Sands of Time. . . . After a short time traveling, the sun reached its apex at midday. Then suddenly, Ameane caught a flicker of dark movement contrasted against the sand. Everyone else saw it too. Three big and bulky humanoids lurked in the distance, easy to see against the desert. This does make sense in the desert where people would be easy to see at a certain point. And so the encounter begins. "They may or may not be hostile; hard to say from here." OOC: Just a little non-action dialogue. Ameane is a strikingly beautiful woman, with heavy, sultry eyes, full red lips, a small rounded nose, dark eyes that flash with emotion, smooth tan skin, and black hair that flows past her shoulders in a straight black sweep. When in town, she often wears one of several well designed and often suggestive outfits.

Concentrating to attempt to discern their nature Cordel calls back softly, "Those definitely do not look human. Your orders, lady Edana?" (OOC- hold action till Edana or Ameane give the word. Would Survival +7 offer me any hint of the likely race of the humanoids ahead?) ((OOC even more- Sorry to take so long to respond... A combination of long days at work and an internet connection so spotty at home thqat I don't want to even bother trying to deal with it... But I'll stay on top of it now.))

"Good idea" Krunk grunts and reaches for a javelin, looking around for any available ground cover (rocks, cacti, etc) saying aloud "Little ones, you may want to take cover..." Krunk then plants himself in a fighting stance, and turns a wary, baleful stare at the strangers. (ooc: just posted to streamline things, intimidate +6, there's probably a penalty for distance?)

OOC: Actions: Cordel retrieves bow and delays. Za delays until humanoids within 60 ft. Krunk retrieves javelin and delays. The 3 humaoids draw weapons, and advance 40 ft. (Now 110 away from Krunk/Cordel). Edana is up. "Three of them. Look like Ogres to me, at least the size is right. We've been spotted and they're headed right for us, weapons drawn. They'll be on us in ten seconds or so at that speed. Your orders, lady Edana?"

Taking a deep breath, the paladin pulls the bow string to full extension, the arrow nocked there fully enflamed. "They don't appear to have parlay on their mind with that approach. Attack at will, all." With that, the paladin lets her arrow fly, doing her best to shoot one of them to at least slow them down a little in their charge.

"You said they were...ogres? Out here? Are you sure?" he asks with a subtle squeak in his voice. Muttering to himself about the beasts' lack of manners, Frimble walks so he is situated about in the middle of all his companions. "Well, I can't be sure about the destructive properties of this spell, but it can help you if these brutes must be fought." Frimble begins to chant, asking Arcanthus for his help in the possible upcoming battle. [OOC: Casting Bless - 3min duration +1 to attacks/saves against fear attacks]

Then, just as he fired, his slick hand slipped sending off the shot wildly as Crimson Flex tumbled to the ground and bounced. Cordel, in fact no one, ever saw the arrow land, it was so off course. Then Frimble finished his holy incantation and the Covenant felt an otherworldly calm and strength settle upon them. OOC: Actions: Cordel fires at #1: Natural 1+7-2 (range)= 6 Cordel fumbles, and drops his bow to the ground. Frimble casts bless. Ameane is up, and Za may jump in at any time. OOC: Start casting sleep on one of the ogres (whichever looks the least tough; if all are equivalent, then whichever is furthest back; if all are equally distant, then the one on the left); Will save DC 15 negates, though it is immune if it has 5 or more hit dice. Spell range = 130 ft. Casting time = 1 round. Duration = 3 minutes. "What's that? What's that?" Old blind Za sounds as if he is just realizing that danger is imminent. "Three lumps on a hill who fein wish us ill? By Arcanthus we're lucky the Flow's with us still!" Fumbling in this pocket, then that one, then another one, the mumbling wizard finally retrieves a small scrap of cured leather, unsurprisingly chewed on one end by his familiar. *"KEERAWZGUNDON,"* he exclaims in a strange, harsh tongue, and a momentary shimmer envelopes him. OOC: Cast mage armor, no move action Za is a gnome with wrinkly, tanned skin and wild, unfocused blue eyes. He is bald except for a bristly fringe of white hair around his head, turning into muttonchops along his jaw and an astonishing mustachio waxed into two long points. He wears a tattered and patched mendicant's robe with a rat crawling through it, and smells slightly of earth, too much wine, and strong cheese. Played by Duke Geoff

He thought about charging up to meet them, but as his fighter's instincts merged with his newfound life's-calling to protect Ameane, he realized that he could protect her more by her side. He spared a glance for his companions...the beautiful Ameane, singing helplessly in the face of danger...the little gnomes, mumbling gobblydegook in fear, Edana and Cordel, both so nervous that their shots went wide...and Cordel even dropped his bow! "Little man, stand tall and fight, I know you have bravery and courage you be" Krunk growls. Looking back towards the oncoming enemy, Krunk begins to feel his heritage boil in his blood. Three large humanoids, threatening his friends, threatening the incomparable Ameane! How dare they, the bastards. With a war-cry worthy of his ancestors, a bloody rage overtakes the large half-orc, and he throws the javelin, aiming for the nearest oncoming enemy, and draws another javelin for his next attack... (ooc: Free action--speak, free action during turn--rage, HP now 39 and AC now 16 for 7 rounds, standard action: throw javelin at no bonus +6 attack bonus +3BAB/+2dex/+1bless, -6 range penalty 1d6 +9 damage, move action--draw another javelin). Krunk is a savage-looking human with obvious orcish blood. He is 6'10" tall with straight black hair pulled back with a thong. His skin is pale bluish-grey and he has deep-set dark green eyes (tinged with red when mad or hungry) and a steely gaze. His body is muscular without a trace of fat, but with many scars on his broad back

In response, the ogre-like beings drew javelins of their own as they advanced, and hurled them back at the Covenant. All three failed to hit their mark. OOC: Situation: Frimble's Bless (+1 attack, +1 saves vs. fear--for all, 3 minutes left) init 15 Actions: Za casts mage armor. Ameane begins casting sleep. Krunk draws javelin and enters rage. Krunk throws javelin at #1: 2+0= 2 Humanoid 1/2/3 each draws javelin and moves 20 ft. (holding melee weapon in off hand temporarily, PCs can do this too of course with one-handed range weapon, but not bow). Humanoid 1 throws at Cordel and misses. Humanoid 2 throws at Edana and misses. Humanoid 3 throws at Krunk and misses. They now stand at a range of 90 ft. Edana is up again. Let us hope little Frimble calling upon Arcanthus' Blessing will help this time, she thinks to herself as she lets the second arrow fly.

Clearing his mind of the swirling chaos, he once again sighted in on the approaching figures and let loose with a single arrow. (OOC- pick up dropped bow as a move action and fire at the lead figure. +7 to hit, D8+3 damage)
