I will address this in the Wilderlands of High Adventure. There's a LOT more in those territories... though they are still going to be a lot more wild than the core lands...

Very true. Bob's campaign adventured almost exclusively in the lands of the City State and Barbarian Altanis. His groups never made it into Viridistan or Tarantis, or further afield, as far as I have been able to determine (or at least that Bob has recalled and relayed to me). Viridistan was mostly based on Craighton Hippenhammer's campaign in that area, while Tarantis was a group effort of design, with Weingand, the Mortimers, Holmer, Sering, and Randle all contributing to something new (though I think some of the material may have been from one or more pre-existing campaigns). And as mentioned, the rest of the maps of the Wilderlands were based on side-material or background, or, in some cases, even randomly generated!

It was not as organic a world as, say, the Forgotten Realms, nor as planned by any means as Dragonlance. It was a hodge-podge of ideas and concepts, firmly developed only in the core region of Map 5 (old Map 1), with a bit splashed to the nearest maps, and then with the two distinct cores of Viridistan and Tarantis.

In my own Majestic Wilderlands, I expanded the maps southwards and made this whole conan combined with the old testament background.

Basically in the dawn age (-2000 BCCC) the southern jungles were infested with demons left over from the uttermost war. Set and Mitra were warrior gods united to rid the Wilderlands of the demons. They each picked a tribe to act as their champion and united them to fight the demons.

Set pick the Thules and the Mitra picked the Ghinorians. They were successful and erected two towers (sounds familair?) in their chief city to commemorate the alliance

But in peace things went bad. Set taught strength and authority and Mitra taught duty and mercy. The Thules began to enslave the surrounding tribes and soon enslaved the Ghinorians as well. This caused Set and Mitra to become enemies and Mitra caused the two towers to be broken and buried.

Then Mitra sent a prophet to lead the Ghinorian out of bondage and to a new land where they will forge a realm based on the ideals of duty, mercy, and justice.

The history of my campaign is basically the history of the Ghinorian and their struggles to maintain their ideals.

The Ghinorian kingdom became an empire which spread through the Wilderland founding colonies Tarsh, Tarantis, Modron, Lenap, Tlan, and City-State. That empire collapsed over a thousand years ago.

The old imperial heartland in the south is now a thinly populated wasteland of villages with only old Imperial Capital of Tula (now the Wizard's City) possessing any form of high civilization. The church of Mitra is now based in the old colonies and struggles to maintain a civilizing presence in what was once the promise land.

The further west towards the Ament Plains (Ament Tundra in WoHF) the more thin civilization become until the land become populated only by Barbarians and Beasts.
