Wilderlands Cosmology same as 4E?

Posts: 85 Jan 13 08 1:49 AM Ghoul Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Tags : None Just as the 4E PoL setting seems to borrow from the Wilderlands, apparently the new 4E cosmology matches up with the cosmology described in the Players Guide to the Wilderlands. The Feywild in 4E matches with Arborea in the Wilderlands. The Shadowfell in 4E matches either with the Shadowlands or the Netherworld in the Wilderlands. The Elemental Chaos in 4E matches with the Elemental Planes in the Wilderlands (or possibly the Netherworld, since it contains the Abyss). The Astral Sea in 4E matches with the Celestial Realm in the Wilderlands. The Far Realm in 4E matches with the Void in the Wilderlands. I have never considered abandoning the Great Wheel for the Wilderlands cosmology before, but I now have more enthusiasm to pick up 4E just to see if Wilderlands is the best setting for the game. Putting aside any hatred for 4E, is it possible that the Wilderlands cosmology matches up?

Posts: 692 Jan 13 08 6:56 AM Vampire Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	It is quite spooky how some of WotC's posts about 4E show how close the cosmology is to that of the Wilderlands of High Fantasy. This is especially interesting as the first article in Adventure Games Journal presents the planar set-up for the Wilderlands of High Adventure, which is a mix of Bob's cosmology and my own (developed long before 4E was even announced). There are some significant differences, but the overall structure is nearly the same. It should be interesting to see how the 4E players relate to the WoHA version... Posts: 456 May 8 08 5:49 PM 2E Master Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Reading this post by James Mishler prompted me to crack the spine of AGJ #1. Looking inside it is beautiful and full of nice little goodies. So, I read the cosmology, or much of it. This world is a tough one to call. Many people will like the flavor of what James did with this. It is different from AD&D first edition. Which to me has always been kind of the defacto standard. However, Jame's presentation has a nice taste to it. Somehwhat different from the cosmos of AD&D but I think it is very in keeping with the elements that Bob Bledsaw had in mind for his wilderlands world. I find it interesting that there may be some comonality between the primary elements envisioned by Bob and the cosmology being presented for 4th edition. However, I"m a bit of a world builder myself. And my starting point for wilderlands cosmology is the Judges History from the Boxed set. I think Bob had a strong hand in the composition of that, if he didn't write most of it himself. (I seem to remember reading a post of his elsewhere in these forums that was similar to the Boxed set's history.) So, I'm looking at it like a puzzle for myself. For those who want a pre-packaged solution, I direct you to James' work on the Subject. Hey, subscribe to AGJ. This is really cool stuff!!!

Posts: 1921 May 12 08 4:44 PM Vampire Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I've been really tempted to throw the cosmology completely out the window and have every god in the wilderlands be the kind of false god described in the player's guide -- you know, the giant scorpion that the locals worship and sacrifice virgins to that the players show up and kill. Divine magic can still be explained away, in 3.5 terms, as unwittingly being based on "concepts" instead of "gods", though the worshippers don't realize it. It's all supposed to come from Gaia, anyway, right? So the clerics think they're getting their magic from the giant scorpions but really they're just using their faith in the giant scorpion to channel magic from a completely different source. I just thought it would be fun in a super-old-school way to have every single god be "killable", and to eventually have the characters go on a rampage of god-murder. EDIT: That said, James Mishler's stuff on the deities of the wilderlands is AWESOME. I love the real-world historical analogies he uses without making any of the stuff carbon-copies of real cultures.
