Imagine that your group has become the unwitting test subjects for a powerful wizard's newly created magic item. A magic item that brings misfortune and injury upon your party. This is but a small part of Vindication.
In Vindication, Lord Sesses, The Darkmage, crafts cursed items and uses them against unwitting people for pleasure and buisness. Often manipulating them into servitude wether knowing or unknowing. The goal for the party is to survive the attacks upon them, and find a way to put an end to Lord Sesses.
The book is filled with information, perhaps unbalanced since the beginning of the book has a lengthy set-up which could of used some trimming, in my opinion. And there might of been a few more cursed items in back.
The first part of the book has several scenarios laid out in it. These are intended to be used seperately, either as side-scenes or within an existing game. It often starts with the PCs ending up with a cursed item and suffering it's effects while a hidden servent of Sesses records the event and rubs salt into the wound.
Other encounters are to be used when the PCs begin investigating their tormenter. They are subjected to ambushes, attacks on their reputation, and inflicted with numerous indignities.
An important note; This module is best suited towards players who have taken an intrest in their PCs and work to develop them and roleplay. Hack-and-slashers will have plenty to do, but those who are more casual about what happens to their characters will cause problems since in several sections, going the classic 'Kick in the door' route will bring a swift end to the game.
The next section details the town where Sesses has taken control and the various people, establishments and orginizations that inhabit it. The town is definatly enemy territory and treading softly will help a lot. Diplomatic PCs will be very happy here, while the combat types will find themselves at a disavantage due to several strict laws in effect.
The castle of Lord Sesses is well designed and the defenses are numerous. Considering the number of forces available, having a co-DM can help a lot when the fighting starts. A stealthy entrance is a must, since an early warning for the castle means drasticly increased defenses.
The final sections describe the numerous opponents the party will eventualy face, along with their suggested battle tactics. I reccomend that stat cards be written up beforehand showing the adjusted scores for buffing spells. This will save much time when things turn violent.
Beyond this is a list of the new magical items, cursed items that the party will encounter, and a new template that can be added to a creature to transform it into a faithful servent for a mage. I do feel that a few more cursed items could of been listed, but the ones shown serve as a good base.
All in all, Vindication is a good module for roleplayers to experiance. Just bring your thick-skins and take heed of the phrase. "Good things come to those who wait."
