I thought last night was going to be a bust: my wife (who plays the best Rogue, ever) went down with a migraine, and we were having difficulty making our oldest child (2 and a bit) eat anything. His younger brother was tucking into pizza with gusto (most people have cheese) and tearing the place up not ideal when theres a game session scheduled for that evening.
In the end, my wife went to bed, and I got both children fed and ready for sleep, with the eldest heading for his bed just as the players turned up. Whilst I had to run up and downstairs to give the youngest some TLC and lidocaine because of his teething, and make drinks for the players, most of them finish levelling up.
So, we have in the party:
Aramil (played by Adam) Wild Elf Barbarian 10/ Pious Templar 4
Drakhus (played by Andy) Dwarf Wizard (Conjuration Specialist) 5/ Summoner PrC 9
Gaspode (played by Mrs meomwt) Human Rogue 14
Lance Vulcan (played by Frendy) Human Favoured Soul 13
Sil-Riak (played by Kevin, AWOL last session) Human Cleric of Pelor 14
Tanzee (played by Nicola, Adams G/F) Human Fighter 12
Party CR = 14.8
Tanzee joined with the party after they rescued her from a Bone Naga and its ghoulish minions in the undead-infested fortress of Shadow Tor.
Having cleared out Shadow Tor (and robbed all the lichs best stuff, something hes going to be mighty sore about when he re-forms), they Teleport back to The Grey Citadel and sort out their loot list. Most of them need a week downtime to read various Tomes and Librams discovered in Shadow Tor. They sell some stuff, and give Elinda Bannon a Golem Manual (which has her rubbing her hands
) and the Lichs magical Laboratory Contents. In return, she agrees to enchant Aramils new axe (Adamantine, rolled 12 given a 20% chance of finding one) and Lances longsword (and shell return other favours as well).
After the downtime, they Teleport back to Traft and head out overland to the Tower of Jhedophar. They are looking for Kurais legendary sword (Blackrazor) and for a way to close the Rift to the Negative Plane they uncovered in Shadow Tor (a Paladins Ghost told them that Jhedophar might have the knowledge they seek).
Jhedophar is a week out of Traft, with part of the trip over the Sepia Uplands, but they get there without any problems.
The Tower looms above them. Drakhus makes a Stonecunning Check (thats my 2E grognard coming out
) to determine what it is built from granite, enchanted so that the surface is as slippery as soapstone. They walk the circumference of the Labyrinth, looking for an alternative way in (I gave them a DC35 Spot check to notice the sulphurous smells coming out of Exeteruss lair, but they all failed), all they could find were the Main Doors.
Determining that they were Arcane Locked, they discussed the best way to overcome things. Lance cast a Dispel Magic which failed, so Sil-Riak cast a Greater Dispel Magic which hit the DC on the button. Gaspode checked the door for traps before picking the lock and getting the door open.
Aramil ventured inside and told everyone about the silver squiggles on the wall. Tanzee entered and read the warning message from Jhedophar which no one heeded and they all entered. With a clang, the Wall of Iron dropped into place across the portal, and they were trapped in the labyrinth.
At this point, my wife came downstairs and helped Andy run Gaspode to great effect, as you will see.
Gaspode scouted left, to Area L-14 (Gargoyles Lair), using his Ring of Invisibility to remain unseen. He trotted back to the others, telling them about the Gargoyle statues hed seen (theyve come across Gargoyles before). The spell-slingers had a chat about whether they could use various Stone Shape or Rock to Mud spells, before deciding to just wade in with weapons.
Aramil attacked the Margoyle, wounding it. Tanzee went for one of the Gargoyles, and knocked it down to one-third hp. Lance cast Flame Strike on two of the Gargoyles and they melted in the extreme heat. The Margoyle scratched Aramil, and two Gargoyles flew in to attack him, inflicing slight wounds only. Two more went for Lance, but couldnt hit him (AC 31), whilst another four tried to tear Tanzee apart.
Gaspode, still Invisible, Sneak Attacked the Margoyle with his bow, seriously harming it. He was now visible, but Drakhus cast a Greater Invisibilty spell on him.
Aramil now waded in to the Margoyle with increased purpose, and managed a Critical Hit for 142 points of damage
. The Margoyle exploded in fragments! He then Cleaved into the two Gargoyles attacking him, dispatching them.
Tanzee hit the first injured Gargoyle and Cleaved into the next Critical, so kaboom. Great Cleave into a third, another Crit, another kaboom. Great Cleave into the last one attacking her, a third Crit and there were very few Gargoyles left, now.
Gaspode took down another with a well-placed sneak, Lance battered one with his sword and killed it, and the fighter types finished off the stragglers. Checking the room, they found an amphora of Adherer Oil, which the gargoyles hadnt had chance to use.
Again using the Ring of Invisibility, Gaspode scouted into L-12 (Lartugis Chamber). The halfling was trying to Hide in the shadows by the door, but Gaspodes Spot check was off the scale and so he spotted Lartugi. Sidling up to him, he asked What you doing here? Lartugi was surprised and asked who was there and what they wanted. Gaspode said they were looking for a sword and Lartugi replied that his employer, Exeterus, might be able to help.
This sounded like a threat to Gaspode (Mrs meomwt said after everyone had gone), so out came the bow and he Sneak Attacked Lartugi for about 30 points of damage. Ouch
. Gaspode then sped back to the others, shouting for help. He dashed over the Pit Trap at L-13 as Tanzee and Aramil ran the other way and triggered it they both made their checks and their sheer speed carried them over the dropping floor. As they dashed into Lartugis room, he has drunk his Potion of Haste and is trying to Hide under his table
