Instead of the writen "Blow em apart' tactics as written, how about having 'BG' kidnap a party member and use them as a hostage in order to get the players to find a Trap the Soul spell for him? BG might even offer up a small sum to help pay for it's purchase and direct the players to a city that has a wizard's guild that can start them on their quest to find it.
In order to keep the players from simply trying to rescue the PC, the BG keeps the PC in a situation that means instant death for them if the players get to stubbern(Such as imprison the PC within a Resilant Sphere at the bottem of the Dead Bog)
This needs some tinkering in order to keep players from feeling completley railroaded. Allow them a chance to detect and defeat the kidnapping attempt. If they succede, BG goes for the traditional brute-force approach.
