A word about the group before I get started. We returned to gaming about 2 years ago after a long break adding some new players to the game. We've been playing low level adventures with the experienced players taking turns to DM. The group has lost couple of members in that time and as I have been playing spell casters (being more experienced than some), the current group has almost no experience of playing spell casters and it shows rather. They also have little experience of demons and other outsiders, so I though The Grey Citadel would be fun and challenge for them.
Note that DM comments are in square brackets.
We don't get much time to play and although we try to meet once a week, we normally only play for a couple of hours sometimes less. This first post covers the first 4 sessions, about 6 hours play in all. The characters are :-
Zoro Mostel, Human male Ftr5, CG
Sera Aluthian, Human female Rog5, CG
Mostovoi, Human male Wiz5, N (Alex, Raven familiar)
Rusty, Halfling male Brd5, CG
I'm running Grey Citadel as a separate adventure and so these characters are new creations. The player of Rusty was asked to play a cleric but wasn't keen on that, so I allowed him to play a bard so long as he took healing spells and bought Wands of healing [they had 9000gp to equip themselves]. I started them at the way station close to the Stoneheart. None knew any of the others but they all had minor hooks to get them to Dun Eamon. Zoro had drunk and gambled away his pay as a caravan guard, got into a fight and been dismissed by the caravan master he was heading towards Dun Eamon as the closest city where he might get employment. Sera is a native of Dun Eamon and was returning home for the spring fair after being away for about a month rich pickings for someone of her talents. This allowed her to know the basic layout of the city and how it was ruled. I gave her player an unmarked map of the city and when locations came up in the game we marked them down. She also knew information about the Angus family and the current rulers. Rusty was also heading to the city for the fair and Mostovoi had a letter of introduction from his old master to Elinda Bannon requesting that his ex student be allowed to study with her for a while.
Play started with Sera at a table being chatted up by a couple of the local farmers (who were getting nowhere) and Zoro at the bar nursing a sore head and wondering how he was going to get to Dun Eamon with his current funds (4sp). Mostel entered the common room and asked Zoro if he wanted breakfast (it was morning) Zoro thought about it for a split second before agreeing to a free meal. In a flash there was a red haired halfling standing on a stool by the bar asking for so food too. Mostel was happy to oblige. Sera came over and asked if Zoro was ok before going outside for some fresh air and to smoke her pipe. Zoro, seeing a pretty lady, followed her outside where he tried to chat her up but with little success. The roleplay was pretty funny though. Mostel being a kind soul, or for some dark reasons of his own ordered food for Sera as well, sending his familiar (the raven Alex) to ask the startled barman for it. He ordered only tea for himself, as he has a Ring of Sustenance. He chatted with Rusty the Halfling and discovered that they were both going to the city. Sera and Zoro returned to the common room and when the food arrived Mostel used Mage Hand (he has a Hand of the Mage) to move the plates to the table. Sera rolled her eyes at this, but said nothing. They ate their meals, Sera picked at hers politely, and she ordered coffee for Zoro's hangover even though the barman warned that it was expensive. Rusty commented on how bad Zoro smelt and used Prestidigitation to clean him off so it was pretty clear who the spellcasters were. They decided to travel to Dun Eamon together, but before leaving Mostel tried to buy a pipe but there was non for sale, although he did pay (over the odds) for some of the local pipeweed.
They headed down the road to the city encountering no one except Brother Melph [random roll] who had not been in Dun Eamon for a while but knew that Elinda Bannon had recently returned to the city. Traveling on they camped at a camp site half way down the Crumbling Cliffs. At dawn they heard someone approaching and Logan the Furrier walked into the camp [random roll]. He was also heading to the spring fair to sell his furs and they decided to travel on together. Near the bottom of the cliffs Sera spotted something moving at the side of the road and pointed it out to the others. Approaching Logan identified it as a brown bear and it soon became clear that it was tearing at something [placed by DM]. Rusty cast Sleep and the bear went down. They retrieved the message to Cael and puzzled over it, before heading on to the city.
They reached the city at a mid morning and were told the rules (where to register for taxes and no magic in the city etc), before each setting off on their own. Sera had given Zoro enough gold from a private bath and massage, but on arriving at the bathhouse he decided to save the money, take a public bath and use the rest of the money for fun elsewhere. On leaving the baths he asked where the nearest alehouse was and was directed to The Hole where Sera had been talking to Rorin. She slipped out without him noticing and he went on to order cheap ale before being told the only rooms to be had were at the market tavern. Sera had walked round the city getting a feel of the place as she had been away for a month. The city was busy due to the spring fair, but there seemed to be fewer of the independent thieves about. She at last found Rorin at The Hole who sold her some information, namely that Elinda Bannon had vanished and that there were demons plaguing the city (I'm sure he was laughing to himself as this information was common knowledge). Mostovoi found his way to the wizards tower only to be intercepted by a mistwatch guard on the wall telling him that Elinda had disappeared and that trying to get into her tower was dangerous. He walked back towards the centre of the city only to see a procession moving towards the keep. Sera saw people moving in that direction and as Zoro reached the ramp up to the upper city the Band of the Crimson mantle passed with the demon on a cross. These 3 PCs were drawn to the gates before the keep and saw Prarchett making the most of the attention. Mostovoi recognised the creature as a dretch, a demon from the abyss. The three had a good look at it as is hung on the wall and Arb Angus presented them with an offer of gold for demons caught and a more substantial reward for sorting out the mess and finding the lost wizard. They asked Arb for a private chat and in the gatehouse showed him the letter to Cael. Arb couldn't help them but got a scribe to make a copy and sent them to his brother at the temple of Kord. Cael also wasn't much help but he expressed his worry about his friend Elinda. Rusty [who's player was not there for this session] spent the time using bardic knowledge, mostly asking questions about the letter to Cael that they had found and didn't come up with much of interest except that the finesmith had been robbed.
All but Rusty headed for the market tavern where Sera and Mostovoi took private rooms and Zoro took a bed in a bunk room. They asked for food and wine and were served by Molly who wanted to hear stories about adventuring. She said that she would come back when she was less busy. Sera spotted a man in the corner with a monkey, who seemed to be watching the room. She went over to introduce herself and find out who he was. He told her that his name was Rasputin and that he performed most evenings at the tavern and that she and her companions should come and listen. Mean while Zoro was drinking heavily, he has got through a gallon of ale and was part way through a second.
Rusty was still snooping about town. He went to the Craft hall and talked to Crenshaw on the pretext of getting some silver scrollwork added to his MW crossbow. He didn't ask about the burglary but looked for any signs that one had taken place. He found none. He set off for the inn and joined his companions just as they were getting Zoro up to bed to sleep off the beer (it was mid afternoon). They left him in the bunk room but Sera locked his sword in her private room for safety (he was still wearing his armour so they felt no one could steal it even with Zoro blind drunk). Rusty paid for a bunk in the same room as Zoro and bought himself some food. Their had just decided that they were going to get some rest and then get up at dusk to go demon hunting in the city when Molly brought over bowl and stew and sat down beside them. She told them how she wanted to become an adventurer and how she had fearlessly killed the rats in the cellar. The party didn't take much interest in her as she was obviously naive and nothing special until she started to mention that she had friends who were going to help her become an adventurer. Sera took her to one side and questioned her more closely but she wouldn't reveal who her friends were except that they were adventurer types and were going to train her. She did let slip that she sometimes carried messages to a merchant in the city but she wouldn't say who [love letters between Lilith and Herrick Mendon]. As Molly talked to the group they noticed Agatha watching, standing hands on hips shaking her head. Molly finished her stew and left. Shortly afterwards the party retied to their rooms to rest for a few hours.
The party was sitting in the common room just after dark discussing what they were going to do. Zoro had a bad hangover, but not as bad as it might have been [he made a fortitude save and only took 1 point of temp Con damage]. As they were about to move out to hunt, they heard a scream coming from outside the side door of the inn. The voices in the tavern stopped but no one moved to look.
The party made for the side door, Rusty pausing to cast Expeditious Retreat on himself before catching up with the others. They exited the inn to see a dim lamp on the ramp leading up to the upper city and looking over the guard rail saw two frightened figures backed against the wall surrounded by four dretches. [I wasn't quite sure how this encounter was laid out from the description, so had Kelvin and Mert close to the base of the lower ramp almost directly under the tavern side door surrounded by dretches and the two others hiding in the mist in the upper city not too far from the top of the ramp.] Zoro jumped over the railing, landing lightly, strode towards the closest demon, struck it with his sword and it went down the fight was on. Mostovoi used a Fireball on three of the dretches, including the one that was down. It killed the fallen one but the others seemed to take little damage. Rusty reached the balcony (the corner by the side door) and started to Inspire Courage. Sera took a shot with her shortbow at the 4th dretch and although hitting it did no damage. The demons attacked one went for Kelvin taking him down, the second went for Zoro missing, and the last tried to Scare Zoro but failed.
Zoro swung at the demon attacking him but missed. The mage aimed a Magic Missile at the dretch attacking Kelvin and took it down. Sera heard something behind her saw two more dretches approaching. She turned and charged at them dropping her bow in favour of her magic dagger, but missed the one that she attacked. The bard started to cast Sleep at the two new foes. Zoro was racked by a full round attack from the dretch in front of him and then flanked by the remaining one below although it missed. The two above attacked the rogue doing minor damage.
Zoro again struck at the one in front of him, putting it down before turning and cleaving the one behind. That one also dropped. Mostovoi fired a Scorching Ray at one of the remaining demons, but it did little damage and he realized that they must be resistant to fire <EG>. Sera attacked again with her dagger and missed before Tumbling away (failing but the dretch missed with the AoO) [she rolled 3 3s in a row 2 attacks and a Tumble check]. Rusty's Sleep spell went off taking down one. He grabbed his crossbow but missed the remaining demon which created a Stinking Cloud, taking out the bard and the rogue, and started to escape.
Zoro dropped his sword ran up the ramp while taking out his longbow and got a good hit of the fleeing demon. Mostovoi stepped out of the cloud, cast Tasha's Hideous Laugher and took the dretch down. The fight was won and Zoro dispatched the sleeping and laughing foes with his flail. Luckily Kelvin had stabilized as the bard was still coughing and in no fit state to heal him. Once recovered Rusty quickly gave Kelvin CLW and returned him to full health.
The mistwatch arrived and agreed to take the bodies of the dretches to the keep. The constable gave the party a token so that they could clam their reward. As they returned to the inn they saw that Rasputin had been watching from the doorway. Kelvin was very grateful to the party and offered them waterproof cloaks all round to be delivered the following morning. There was good will throughout the tavern, but the party healed the minor damage that they had received and went to bed.
The following morning they met Rasputin at breakfast and he put his proposition. Then the party headed to the keep for their rewards (300gp) and Arb also gave them a letter with a seal on it to say that they were authorized to look into the matters of the demons and missing wizard. [my way of giving +2 for 'helpfulness']. He also told them about the other two robberies and asked them to look into them.
They did this and those encounters went much at written with the party getting a list of what was stolen. [I left them to think through the implications]
