In honor of the upcoming rebirth of the Queen of Spiders, which will be documented in the upcoming Resurrection and in which all of you miserable weak mortals will soon fall upon your bellies in fear and begging for non-existent mercy, we will now delve into her former home one layer at a time. Oh yes!!! Our beloved Lady of Spiders had yank the Demonweb Pits out from the Abyss and it has become its own plane.
Yes! Its own plane!!!!
In the novels, the traitorous Halisstra Melarn had turn her back from the Lady of Spiders to that dancing fool Eilistraee and plans to kill the Demon Queen of Spiders. We all know that she will FAIL.
We now look into Abyss, Lolth's former home....and sneer upon the petty demon princes and their petty realm. The Spider Queen is, after all, above competition. She is forever-more, superior, in every way.
LAYER ONE
The Plains of Infinite Portals
The 666 Layers of the Abyss is an ugly and violent plane where only the strongest, the most malicious, and the most devious, survive. The very first layer is a fit welcome doormat to those who are foolish enough to come to the Abyss.
Called the Plains of Infinite Portals, the first layer goes by a plethora of other titles: The Palace of 1001 Closets, Pazunia, the Wasteland of Gates, among others. It is a barren and dusty place without life or greenery. Four features break the monotony: a hellish red sun blazing above the landscape, baking everything underneath; the ever winding branches of the notorious River Styx; great iron fortresses, and finally and most significantly, huge pits in the earth.
The pits serve as gates, or portals to othe deeper layers of the Abyss. There is no telling which layer will each hole deposit travelers into other than through divination or suicidal experiments. Some are not even gates, merely deep pits which at the bottom, lurk creatures far worse than the layers themselves.
Some pits are two way portals, while others are one way, stranding travelers on the new layers. Still others, as befitting the chaotic nature of the Abyss, changes their destination layers from day to day.
The Iron Fortresses are home to powerful demons and their servants. Most of these are simply fiends who managed to carve a minor power base for themselves in the Abyss...most of the ruler of the fortresses are balors, mariliths, nalfeshnees, succubi, nabassus. advanced fiends, archdemons. and every once in a while, a lesser demon lord (like Aldinach, Ahazu, Baltazo, and Laraie...all of whom have their own holdings in deeper layers of the Abyss). It is not uncommon for fiends from one fortress to launch an attack on another; sieges are quite common on the Plains of Infinite Portals.
Some Iron Fortresses are where demon princes place their true bodies while they travel the planes. These places are closely guarded by an army of demons and protected by powerful magics. They are virtually impregnable.
There are a few sites of interests to travelers, including the town of Broken Reach, ruled by the succubus Red Shroud, and the fiecerly guarded Lakes of Molten Iron, where the fortress of Ferrug can be found.
Other notable sites and fortresses includes: Battle Not With Mosnters, the Iron Fortress of Mithrengo, the Edge of Sanity, Raazorforge, Styros, Sonu-Aar'ri, the Tower of Chiryn, the Dolorous Keep, Fortress of the Fallen Stair, and Gallowsgate (rule by the marilith Jaranda).
