This includes cinema (Le Jete anyone?) and movies (The Last Boy Scout) and everything in-between. I can appreciate the art of 8 1/2, but love the schtick of Hudson Hawk - go figure. I have this conversation with a lot of people. What are the best fantasy films of all time? Fantasy films are without a doubt one of the most maligned genres - and for good reason - they generally are horrible movies. With that in mind these are the fantasy films I love... Love (no order) CONAN (have to say that in all caps. Just saying it you know I mean the Barbarian not the sequel, not Red Sonja and not the TV show). - Why? Are you kidding! Greatest Fantasy Film Period. Fellowship of the Ring - Ok. Its brand new. The sequels may even be better. I have only seen it twice so I can't say it is better than CtB. Excalibur - Great movie, great director, decent acting (and over-acting). Remove a couple of scenes with Merlin (that forest scene with the funky eyes) and daaang that is a great flick. Legend - This is like the movie that could have been. I always have had the sense that something was ripped from this movie. I hope an eventual DvD restores it. Even still, has some amazing fantasy elements. Kagemusha - Ok. This isn't a fantasy film per se. However, this has a great story in medeval Japan. Also, I love Kurasawa (sp?) and think this is his best work - yes better than Yojimbo, Seven Samurai and Ran. (Side note, this was produced by Coppola and George Lucas). Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon - Again, not what you would traditionally think of a fantasy film. However - had a magic item, magical powers and fighters, wizards, thieves, etc. etc. There are so few decent fantasy films that I would include it on the list. What does everyone else think? Posts: 1219 Feb 5 02 4:41 PM Wight Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I agree with you about Fellowship of the Ring, maybe the best fantasy movie ever made (though that could be damning with faint praise - for some reason fantasy doesn't go to screen well usually). I agree with most of your other choices as well (sex in plate mail!). I don't know what you were smoking to make you enjoy the first Conan flick so much, but I want some. Gygax panned that film in an ancient Dragon review and for once I agree - he called it "Conan vs. the Flower Children of Set." 'Nuff said. Shrek was another good fantasy flick overall. The original Hobbit cartoon, with cheesy music (very nice - I think Donovan was the song perpetrator?), I also enjoyed very much. Disney's Fantasia. Does Kurosawa's Seven Samurai count? Throne of Blood? What about something like The Princess Bride? What are our parameters here? My favorites, all bad (but I liked them anyway): - The Sword and the Sorceror. - Hawk the Slayer - the Thundarr the Barbarian cartoon - Conan the Destroyer (with Wilt "The Stilt" Chamberlain!) - Clash of the Titans There were some others that were kind of okay too, like Ladyhawke and Dragonslayer. A lot of people dislike those films, and they are sedate, but they were better than garbage like "Ator", "Kull", and "The Sorceress"...old Lou Ferrigno Hercules movies...don't make me remember that stuff...

Deathstalker (yes, Deathstalker...good "let's get drunk and watch a movie" movie) Ladyhawke Krull (is it fantasy or sci fi?) That's about it for the "high fantasy" genre. If we opened it out there's a ton of fantastic movies that I could suggest (e.g., Raiders of the Lost Ark--great artifact quest movie)...

Other favourites: A Clockwork Orange Caligula (the music from Romeo & Juliet by Prokoviev fits this movie so well!) Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. Most stuff by the Coen brothers (esp. Fargo, The Big Lebowski, Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?). Brazil. Geez, there's lots of them.

I love the Godfather series, the Outlaw Josey Wales, Star Wars (all but #1). Then there are the Sinbad flicks; oh, lest i forget--Jason and the Argonauts. Jason and the boys influenced my gaming as much as Mr. Howard;s man Conan.

The evil b*tch queen was almost laughable. (Note to would-be casting people: keep that woman out of Conan III and away from Arnold) I normally hate war movies with a passion (in Dirty Dozen, i was rooting for the Germans), but Kelly's Heroes was beautiful. I will second the Holy Grail and Brazil (deeepreeeesssing!) and add The Seventh Seal to the list. It is an art movie (also very deeepresssssing), but I love it. Ingmar Bergman is a genius.

Posts: 3686 Feb 8 02 11:48 AM Type I Demon Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I like both Conan movies (great Basil Poledoris score, and Mako is marvelous as the wizard), but they bear the same relation to Robert E. Howard's Conan that Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes bears to the original version -- name's the same, but nothing else is. Arnie, though I like the big dope, is utterly miscast as Conan. Whereas Conan is a barbarian with a veneer of civilization, Schwartzenegger is the converse. He's a big softie who tries to play tough guys. To faithfully adapt Conan to the screen would require an actor who is able to convince you that he's actually a warrior, a guy who holds violent death in his hands, is incredibly muscled, yet has the quickness and moves of a panther. Bruce Lee is the only guy who comes close (and he's a mismatch in other ways -- not to mention being dead for almost 30 years). (Thinking about the Conan movies underscores how incredibly faithful Peter Jackson's LotR is to its source. Those who complain about the differences are big time nitpickers. If Boorman had adapted LotR in the 70s instead of making Excalibur, we'd've had Frodo swinging a sword into Mordor. Or worse.)

Anyway, the guy is premo for action flicks. Hes got the size, moves and acting from wrestling to be a big player in movies.
