Eyeballing the current carnage with where our last session left off, the party of seven were storming the hideout of the hobgoblin mercenaries the White Walker has been amassing among the cliff warrens. After locating the site thanks to treasure map spells and some dead hobgoblins from an alleyway ambush, the party was all too eager to go sack their 'stronghold'--simply because all of the hobgoblins pack magical gear! This is all copacetic, but I am just eyeballing just how -much- magical loot a successful sortie which wipes out the mercenary band would actually entail.
After tallying the value of just the cost of the masterwork quality (300gp a pop) and the value of enhancement bonuses and whatnot (i.e. ignoring the base value/masterwork/etc. of those respective arms & armor), if the gang manages to sell off the spoils from the full entourage of Hobgoblins they will net roughly 150,200gp to divide amongst themselves, give or take 5 - 7,000gp or so. Quite a haul! Bizarrely, the actual 'treasure stash' of the hobgoblins totals roughly 3,000 gp and some potions. Considering Old Death's big old hoard of wealth was around 25 - 30,000 gp, it just has me boggling a little bit.
I'm not opposed to the gang getting a much-needed cash influx (even ramping up loot in many cases, they're still having a hard time making ends meet after resurrection and restoration costs, purchasing plenty of scrolls and potions, etc.), but mostly I'm somewhat ponderous of the challenge vs. reward in play in this particular instance; the hobgoblin mercenaries are fairly meaty combatants (the infantry which comprise the bulk of their forces pack 60+ HP each and a few fighter levels, etc.) but ultimately are mostly a meat-grinder susceptible to a lot of softening from fireball artillery, etc.
Anyone have any thoughts?
