After years of running d20, as much as I enjoyed it, I have found a renewed appreciation in simplicity. As my screen name over that the Savage Worlds forum implies, in the last year or two I've become less of a DnDChick and more of a SavageGamerGirl. Since they have an airship, they were easily able to come in from above the towers take control of the fort's defenses (upgraded to field cannons, since this is black powder era) and turn them on the ogres. Unfortunately, lousy damage rolls meant that the cannons did little more than make flash-bang. Grimulak and several ogres escaped into the tunnels below. The Order of the Dice... I was trying out something called the Adventure Deck, which is a deck of cards that players can use in Savage Worlds to throw in plot twists, give themselves and other players bonuses, and so on. Tonight one player, a guy running a muscled bruiser named Pirate Pete, played the Love Interest card (which makes an NPC fall in love with that character) --- on Gorrush Karr. So in this adventure Gorrush Karr became a succubus, transforming from his male form to a pleasing female form when she saw and instantly fell in love with Pirate Pete. The Order of the Dice... Don't be too surprised if your scruffy urchin is able to hold her own against the Queen's soldiers. Savage Worlds is meant to be pulpy and cinematic, so legions of lesser mooks fall before you relatively easily. SW is more about the action and the story than resource management, nitpicky battlemat tactics, and TPKs. It's quite a different animal from d20. The Order of the Dice... It seems to promote going with the luck of the dice more so than thinking your way out of things or flying by the seat of your pants in the way the old school games I've played in the past do. Have you tried 7th Sea? That one is interesting. There seems to be huge importance placed upon character backgrounds over builds IMO. For those who want something with a historical twist, it definately mashes together a number of interesting eras. Sorry for not seeing your question earlier. I've been a bit busy.

A difficulty of 4 for most tasks may seem pretty high when the average person would have a d6 in a given skill, but you only roll if the task is supposed to be difficult anyway. The standard 4 target number is already the 'hard' difficulty. In most cases, if a character is trying something that an average person will more often succeed at than fail, then there's no reason to touch the dice at all. You and the player can just narrate what's happening. If you want it to be easy but still require a roll, you can have them make the roll at +1 so they'll only fail on a roll of 2 or lower. A +2 means they'll only fail on a 1. There isn't a rule for every contingency, and there doesn't have to be. You don't need to make the players roll for every single skill check unless you want it to be dramatic for some reason. The Order of the Dice... OF DOOM!: My game group's website.
