For some reason I assumed Cabin Boy stepped back from the ledge when you handed him the torch, allowing Cheyne better vision.
Dropoff is sheer, and a quick peek shows the wall to be metal like the rest of the ship.
The glowing man is roughly 45 degrees down from you, and to the right side, so it is not 50 yards out or down. Do the old a2+b2=c2 where c2=50 if you want to do the math as far as vertical and horizontal distances; but given the strange nature of the chamber, 50 yards is only a guess at this point.
