Yes. You can't use the buckler for AC while you are shooting with a bow, but since it's strapped to your forearm, you still have it equipped and can
use it without needing to ready it in rounds when you are not shooting. There's an attack penalty for wielding 2-handed melee weapons with a buckler, but
not for wielding a bow with a buckler.
So the trade-off is: the buckler gives him +2 AC, but only when he's not actually shooting with his bow. The armor gives him no AC improvement, but does lower his ACP by one, which would improve most of his physical skills, including swimming, climbing, balancing, and tumbling. (It would actually improve swimming by 2, since ACPs for swim checks are doubled.)

You are 9 days by sea from Fort Greenrock, where you expect to be able to resupply/buy/sell. If the question is, 'is anything bad going to happen in the
next 9 days', well, I'm not going to answer that! You don't have any stops scheduled.

One more thing,
Amella's relationship with Gorum predated yours...he was her First Mate. Given the difficulties you face she thinks it's fine that you take some of his stuff, but the magic greataxe should stay with the Sea Wyvern, to be returned to his next of kin when it returns to Sasserine. Your sale value for the greataxe is wrong in any case. BTW, the shields were wooden. Ken |

Latest items to distribute:
+1 mithral chainmail (2,575 gp) cloak of the manta ray (3,600 gp) For the chainmail, one problem is that it has a max Dex bonus of +4. This means that for high-Dex PCs with Dodge, they'll effectively be losing some or all of their dodge bonus to AC. About the only PC this wouldn't affect currently is Ossic. If he wore it (replacing his +1 breastplate) his AC wouldn't change, but his speed would go up and his encumbrance would go down (due to wearing light armor); he would be the logical choice to give it to. Alternately, Jenkin could actually use it (though you may think of him as wizardly, he's actually proficient in light and medium armors). Amella could also get some use out of it, probably. Or maybe Lavinia? For the cloak of the manta ray, I think it would be best served on one of the fighter types, notably Ion or Blodwyn. It would vastly improve your underwater mobility. Just be sure you have a good piercing weapon, so you can attack with relatively little penalty! Actually, Judan could make good use of the cloak too (since he could get sneak attack on the tail attack, which is in addition to all other attacks, and mobility is very useful for a rogue). However, he's done very well recently lootwise, so he'll pass for now. Maybe at some point in the future he'll revisit the possibility of getting one of these cloaks made--or buying it from whoever possessess it at that point in time.

BTW, I'm still trying to figure out how the Cloak of the Manta Ray works. It says that when in the water it turns you into a Manta Ray (per the Polymorph
spell) , but that you can pull your arms out of the cloak and use them normally? What a wierd magic item! What happens to your equipment?
Ken |
|||
Damien the Bloodfeaster |
|||

It's a little unclear. At the very least, if you pull your arms out, then anything you are wielding/wearing on them (notably rings, bracers, and gauntlets)
should still function. I'd guess the rest would be subsumed into manta ray form, which might have an impact on AC and the rest.
If you want to keep it simple, just rule that in manta form you retain all your existing abilities, etc., except you get the swim speed, water breathing, +3 natural armor bonus, and tail attack. It does not eliminate combat penalties for fighting underwater (e.g., trying to swing a mace without freedom of movement), though there is no penalty on using the tail attack. I'd also allow the person to retain the ability to talk while in manta form, as well as do spellcasting. It does not specify if the tail attack adds your strength bonus or not. I'd recommend either 1/2 strength bonus to damage or no strength bonus. Note also that manta rays are Large size, with a 5-foot reach. This means that while in manta form you'd have a -1 size penalty to AC and attacks, a +4 size bonus to grapple checks, etc. If you go with the polymorph ruling, then I believe your physical scores would change to Str 15, Dex 11, Con 10 (standard for a manta) and you'd gain a ram attack in addition. You'd lose the ability to speak or cast spells, and all items not worn on your arms or wielded in hand would become fused with your new form and inoperable. Since it appears this ability is automatic when you enter saltwater, you'd be stuck like this until you left the water. Not very useful, and the stat changes would require some recalculation.

Well, the item is priced at 7200gp, less than a simple +3 amulet of natural armor. So, the fact that you have to assume some limitations of the manta ray form
is probably part of the deal, given that you're also getting a fast swim speed and some other stuff.
Let me ask around and see what other people have done. If you see anything on the internet about this item, let me know. I'll also look at what they did in Pathfinder. Ken |

One oddity is that although you are large size, per polymorph's description, gear does not automatically resize to fit you (that is, most magical gear
does, but magic armor and weapons and nonmagical gear would not). This means that any weapons you wield would automatically be too small for your new form,
resulting in a penalty to your attacks! Seems fishy to me...! One fix is to rule that although you occupy the space of a large creature, your arms are still
medium, so you do not gain the larger dice or penalty for using a mismatched weapon size. (Up to you whether the other penalties for being large still apply.)
IMO it's easier to ignore the "polymorph" ruling and treat it more like a disguise that grants certain specific bonuses. But let me know what you find out!

Yeah, I think keeping it simple sounds good.
I've had some real life encounters with Manta Rays while snorkeling in Belize, and they are definitely not all large size. I think I'd like not to deal with that. So this cloak won't change the size of the wearer. So, 1) the cloak functions automatically when you enter saltwater. No action to activate, no choice. 2) You stay at your normal size (medium for all of you), but are a manta ray. When you change into a manta ray, your arms are not extended. 3) It's a move action to extend your arms. When you do so, whatever you were carrying when polymorphed (within reason) comes out with them. So you can attack with weapons, use a shield, cast spells. 4) your worn armor is nonfunctional, but you get the Manta Ray's +3 natural armor bonus (probably resulting in a lower AC) 5) you ability to talk and cast spells underwater is unchanged. 6) it's a move action to retract your arms. 7) you don't get the slam attack listed in the manta ray's stat block; you just get the tail attack. The tail seems to be a primary attack; wouldn't that imply that it gets full STR bonus? Ken |

Your call on the tail attack. I figured it would be a secondary attack if you are wielding weapons, but allowing it as an additional primary attack works for
me too!
Note to the spellcasters: You may be able to cast spells with verbal components, but keep in mind you won't be able to use spells with material or focus components (such as a holy symbol) unless they were in hand when you polymorphed! IMO the best person for the cloak would be a nonspellcaster, probably Blodwyn. If you wear it, be sure to have a piercing weapon in hand (likely your rapier) before jumping in the water! Would you allow a person wearing the cloak underwater the ability to remove the cloak if desired? Perhaps as a standard action?

I can't remember if you can use shields underwater without penalty. There's no reference to it in the underwater combat section, DMG p. 93. I'd
think at the very least that tower and large shields might be unusable, and maybe small shields too.
As an aside, there IS a reference to invisibility underwater. Says you do indeed create a displaced bubble of air, and lose total concealment, instead gaining standard concealment (20% miss chance) while submerged. My bad!

No, I don't think the cloak can be removed while you're in the water. You're a manta ray, not a manta ray wearing a cloak.
Note that the cloak grants a swim speed of 60, while a Manta Ray normally only has a swim speed of 30. With respect to the tail sting, the magic item description states 'This attack can be used in addition to any other attack the character has, using his highest melee attack bonus.' To me, that strongly implies that it's an additional primary attack. If it were secondary, by the rules it wouldn't use the highest melee attack bonus, would it? Since this item is strongly situational (only works in salt water) I don't mind if it's a bit powerful. So I think we'll go with full STR bonus. Ken |

Ossic would use the +1 mithril chainmail. Same AC, but faster movement for a combat medic is good.
I can't find any use for the 1000g worth of necromantic rough agates that Judan found in the fort's ruins. Not that Pelor would really approve of a robe of bones anyway I noticed on the party loot tally that I'm down as holding the party's necklace of prayer beads. Hmmm, neither of us has it on our character sheets. I thought Roongshri, as our designated blessing master, would be a better fit. Don't get me wrong, it's a great resource, and Ossic would use it regularly. If Roongshri wants it though, it's his. |
