Well, I still find myself thinking of the music that I listened to in college as "new music", even though it's now getting on 20+ years old. But
then again, bands from the day like Tool, Red Hot Chili Peppers, etc. are still making albums and still popular (and still decidedly "alternative").
Now I'm listening to Coldplay's "Viva la Vida". I get this via the music club a few months ago, and now that I'm getting caught up with listening to recent purchases I've finally gotten around to listening to it.
Really, really good. I thought that they'd never match "A Rush of Blood to the Head", but this album is just as good.
When it first started, I thought that I was listening to a Sigur Ros album, though I couldn't remember putting one in the carousel, then it started to sound more like Radiohead. Then the vocals kicked in and I realized that it was Coldplay. Yeah, like the reviews said, this album is a departure for them in terms of sound, but they really pulled it off quite well. It does live up to the rave reviews. Now I need to pick up that "Prospekt March" (sp?) e.p. that they put out.
