The layout design is a conscious design decision. The idea was for functional and readable with efficient use of space. Fancy headers and graphics were not desired.
Not saying that "fancy" *is* desired Peter-and by all means it's y'alls decision to make but I'll offer up 2 examples (one new, one old) of functional and readable with efficient use of space that are also "good looking" products (and while function should take precedence over form- form is a selling point-you don't have to finish with the big boys, but you at least should try to enter the race)
1) Moldvay/Cook/Marsh Basic/Expert books
2) Goodman's 4E DCC series (haven't see the older 3E versions, so don'tknow if they are the same)-While the DCC's are a bit "fancier" than #1 they still are readable and make uses of the space quite well considering- a smaller font as TLG uses would make it even better.
Anyhoo, thats all IMO, YMMV, Don't take with Alcohol, if your erection last longer than 4 hours see your Dr, etc etc etc
