(Upper Temple) - ring of teleportation - |

I looked back through the threads here and couldn't find what I need. I know it has been brought up before but what is up with the preist's ring in the
upper temple? Anyone have any real info on it? I plan on running said enconter as it is written but really don't want to spend an hour arguing rules with
our groups accountant/rules lawyer. I know what the judge says goes, blah, blah...wish it was that easy sometimes!

The problem that you will find repeatedly in RARE is that the encounters are not really created for 3.5e. This comes up in encounter descriptions like Scramge.
I am sure that it will come up in magic items as well. You can handle it two ways: (1) dumb the items down so that it conforms to 3.5e rules (in which case the
encounter will not occur as it was intended), or (2) amp up the value of the item so that it does occur as intended. I have a rules lawyer in my gaming group
and he loves to go down to the last detail on rules. When I see that the module intended the encounter to work a certain way, then I give the required
powers/abilities/etc. to the encounter works as written. If an items then becomes too powerful to give to the PCs, then I have it blow up or disintegrate, and
then replace it with an item that is equivalent in gp value without being powered up. It is funny, but I have the feeling that this mod was not written by
rules lawyers, which can cause confusion for the DM at times. You will just have to analyze these types of encounters and come up with the appropriate
rationale for it to happen as written, not as adjudicated.

I changed the ring to a ring of telekinesis since that fit the bill just nicely. Never got to use it though.

I completely changing the Scramge encounter to a bunch of Rakashas that are in the Tome of Battle as I expect the bellyaching about the encounter as written
would be legendary. "What do you mean we killed our halfling wizardess? That doesn't make any sense! We didn't kill her and this is
retarded!"
I'm pretty sure I'm changing the Upper Temple encounter as well because I don't like that whole "I teleport you into the lava" thing. I can certainly keep it deadly and do it within the 3.5 rules. Maybe have have the Type I(s) grapple characters and try to carry them there? Or casting Baleful Transposition on a character to switcharoo them with a Vrock flying over the lava. Same evilness, less oddball items that cause eye-rolling. |

Hey, how much is a Ring of Teleport Other worth?

I would ballpark it in the 100k range.

You can a write up for Teleport Other spell in Necro's own Eldritch Sorcery.
The Teleport Other spell has a range of 30 ft (it's not a touch attack). As another alternative, check out the Dimensional Hop spell from the Player's Handbook 2 (although it does not teleport targets nearly as far). Ugh! I wish that the spells' sources would be sited.

I'll have to look at that Dimensional Hop spell. My players are 1 session away from being here so this is a good heads up to the problems soon to be at
hand.

I'm thinking a Ring of Spell Storing with Baleful Transposition. Totally within the "WotC Official rules" my players demand, gives some useful
loot without something so ubar as a Ring of Teleport Other (or as suggested, Telekinesis) and requires me to come up with targets for the switcharoo (again,
Vrocks, Spectres, summoned critters can easily fly over the lava for that purpose, so no one can cry foul about being sent swimming in the magma)

Make sure that you dole out enough rings to execute the switches efficiently!
BTW, this spell interpretation runs throughout the mod. So be prepared to deal with it repeatedly.

Well, I think this is simply a bad slip-up. I think the "Teleport other" ring is a hold over from 1e... but, yeah, it would have been nice for
clarification, especially in RARE.

I see it being used in the final battle to transpose PCs from the "ground" to the Abyss, where the automatically die.

Heh, I'm just using the damn ring as is. I like the fact that there are items with cool powers that aren't found in the Core books, especially
throwbacks to ol' 1st edition (like the "Fool's Gold" spell). My campaign is only using Core books, but I already informed them from the
beginning that there were some items/monsters that were module specific. If they don't like the ring...tough. But I don't think that'll be the
case. As soon as they see what it can do, they'll get greedy and want it for themselves! Good luck to them getting it, though...
