Posts: 3869 Dec 27 07 1:36 AM Dark Walker of the Planes Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Yeah, definitely one of the best books of the 3.0/3.5 era. I plan on using it in my Anger of Angels campaign, but not for awhile. In the current adventure, they're on the Elemental Plane of Earth and may encounter a group of dao whose rule was usurped by an amethyst dragon. If so, the dao could be used as a hook to bring them eventually to the City of Brass.

Posts: 119 Jan 10 08 5:59 AM Ghoul Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I want to get my players there next session. Unfortunately I'm a little low on interesting ideas. How to get them there? They avoided the Dread Pagoda I had put in their path that would have contained an efreet slave that would have gladly taken them to the city and through the gate. The plot requires them to kill a powerful blacksmith that was involved in producing a legendary weapon that was used in the Blood War. Any suggestions on which blacksmith to pick? The average party level is 9 right now with five characters. The players also want to buy some cool magical gear. Any ideas of how to turn that into a cool adventure? Personally I'd like them to set up camp in the crazy wooden tower with the three wizard elves at the top. I also need to figure out how to get them there. Questions, questions, and not enough time. I wonder if things would be easier to prep if I had more indexes and summaries available to me. Currently running The Vault of Larin Karr, Shackled City, and Red Hand of Doom

The party is around level 10, so Iskandr just forced them to sign a hellish contract bringing him the stone of water from the oasis. I didn't think that the intro would make a very good adventure because it seemed really linear. It turns out that it was quite fun and I only discovered on a second reading that they will have to retrieve the two missing parts of the brass horseman for them to actually find the portal. And suddenly there's a lot of interaction between the various locations on the map. I still need to figure out a good explanation for Iskandr in Dawwad. I plan to do some City of Brass based adventures in the somewhat near future (probably next year) and I'm interested in seeing what other folks do with it. Sorry I didn't reply to your earlier posts, but I just didn't have anything constructive to say. I've only browsed through the books myself, so I don't have the knowledge to guide you. It's a shame Bowbe/Casey, the author, hasn't stopped by lately, I'm sure he would have some great ideas for you. I assume you're aware of the pages of adventure seeds that are at the back of the "Secrets of the Brazen Throne" book. If not, you might find some more inspiration there.

Posts: 119 Jan 22 08 3:29 AM Ghoul Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Yes, I recently discovered that section by accident. I think I'll do a bit more about the desert bandits. Yesterday we had another session where the players figured out that the missing piece they needed was at the oasis. Random encounters for the day included sand ghouls (posing as desert bandits), desert bandits (the real ones), and scorpions. The refugees were happy that the party slew the infamous bandit leader Abdel-Aziz and the party convinced them to relocate north because they expect the Lotus Eaters to be a lot more agressive now that their oasis is going to try up eventually. So what I'll do is I'll invent some backstory about desert bandits that used to attack pilgrims, and in their camp the party will be able to find a stranded ship or two. In the old days, apparently, the bandits had flying ships (matching one of the adventure seeds from the City of Brass). And thus the party will have the opportunity of figuring out how these ships fly, bring back the secret, and have a flying ship on the Material Plane. A little sidequest if any of the players is interested, and if they do decide to follow the bandit's trail back to their camp. I also know that one of my players is very curious about Izkandr in Dawwad. As I said I started the adventure without the djinn blockade, so now I still need to invent a reason for him to be there. Maybe he was banished from his master's courts in hell -- but what prevents him from returning... I'm not yet clear on that one. Posts: 119 Jan 28 08 5:19 PM Ghoul Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	This session only three players were around: The two weapon fighting Shadowdancer (Rng-6/Ftr-1/Rog-1/Sha-3), the archer (Ftr-6/Clr-2/Rgr-2), and the mystic theurge (Clr-3/Wiz-3/Mys-3). They wanted the horseman's torso. The Shadowdancer's companion moved through the village and discovered the cheitan and the temple with the ominous statue amidst the Lotus Eaters. They decided on a campaign of terror, hiding during the day in a little hole up on the steep cliffs in the East. Fifty feet up, only reachable using Spiderclimb. At night they slipped into the village, invisible and silenced, and they killed seven Lotus Eaters in their drugged sleep. A few hours later, the dead bodies were discovered, the cheitan wished for one of the read to be revived, then the revived wished to know where his murderer was, and then 30 Lotus Eaters, the cheitan, and an invisible Muad made their way to the party's hideout. They shot arrows at the sheitan, cast Fireball at the Lotus Eaters, and then the invisible Efreeti appeared on their ledge and started slamming the archer. When the Shadowdancer was slain, the remaining two characters were in dispair: What to do? Then they remembered the Book of Pazuzu they had read so long ago. And the mystic theurge called out: Pazuzu! Pazuzu! Pazuzu! (Fiendish Codex) And the demon lord came, revived the shadowdancer and finished the cheitan off with a single blow of his breath weapon. Thus was the horseman's torso recovered. And thus was the seed of corruption sown in yet another character's soul. Currently running The Vault of Larin Karr, Shackled City, and Red Hand of Doom

Am I correct in understanding that they haven't made it to the City of Brass proper yet? If not, will you have them wait in that long line and deal with all the vendors etc. along the way (I at least read that part of the boxed set)? Were the pcs crazy enough to come up with the Pazuzu solution themselves, or did you drop a hint? Are you thinking of linking Pazuzu to the City of Brass? I'm looking forward to the next update.

Posts: 119 Jan 29 08 7:08 AM Ghoul Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I have some background, all rooted in an alternate take on the Red Hand of Doom. We only played four chapters, so I proposed that we advance Tiamat to a CR 20+ aspect and focus on getting help in the planes instead of going to the fane right away. The players agreed. So I added some history to the legendary (legacy) sword our cleric wields involving Pazuzu, tengus, and men on one side, Obox-ob, kappas, and kumos on the other side, and some devils using Tiamat as a front to use the sword and manipulations in the City of Brass to tipp that battle in favor of Pazuzu. Anyway, long story that is only half written up. But Obox-ob, Pazuzu, Tiamat, and Amaterasu are the big players in this game, and the City of Brass is where a lot of dealing took place five hundred years ago. Some sessions back they fought a guy on the Shadow Plane that had books granting Knowledge (the planes) +2 for Pazuzu and Obox-ob. Naturally they were curious and learnt, amongst other things, how to summon him. Ever since, they felt the soft tugging of temptation... And I wasn't going to deny it! One of my players let a Glabrezu demon of the Obox-ob faction ride with her (Fiendish Codex again), and this demon wants her to slay one of the smiths involved in the deals back then. Now we have a second player who feels the corrupting lure of power -- but this time it's the Pazuzu faction! And the third player who wields the sword of legacy is clearly on the side of good. I'm hoping for some difficult sessions where the party will have to pick sides eventually and deal with the consequences. Right now I want them to feel a tension building up and I want them to feel like they're walking a thin line between hell and damnation. There are powerful foes in all directions, but perhaps the enemy of my enemy is my friend... Something like that. As for entering the city, I think the cave of secrets offers direct entrance to the city if you have all stones, and as far as I've read it, you need all four stones to operate it. Thus, the players can go anywhere they want inside the city. No waiting in line will be required. One complication is that they handed one of the stones they will need eventually to Izkandr in Dawwad. So it'll be interesting to see how they'll get it back. Specially since they now fought and killed their potential evil allies in the area. I haven't yet thought about it. Once inside the city, I want to use the ambassadors from hell and some complications involving the Blood War. The party wants to be good but has already two demonic allies. I'm not yet sure how to do it. I must assume that the devils are trying to protect their agents, so if the party is not actively seeking help, they'll be drawn into the Blood War on the demonic side, and the Sultan will try to put down all signs of unrest. Those are my vague mid-term plans. The party just wants to kill the smith and buy new magic items. I decided to allow the Magic Item Compendium in the City of Brass. That adds extra mystery to the shopping, I'm sure. Currently running The Vault of Larin Karr and The City of Brass, and playing in The Shackled City Adventure Path and Echoes of Heaven

I learned a long time ago not to expect anything to be played "exactly" as written so of course I have become more enamored with critical suggestions vs. the full on "do it this way" approach. That never works out, and never did when I used to run pre-purchased stuff so I always find it cool how people fit things into their own personal campaings. Interesting with the "zuzu" angle being used by your characters. Ages ago when I was a younger fella, my friends and I came across some old library books on sorcery and what not. THe airlord "Zu" seems to have had a lot of weight historically... rotten junk and all. One time one of my friends, not believing the old cryptic warnings about saying that particular name 3 times did so while we were driving somewhere... and the car we were in died. Other strange happenstances also insued when others would invoke that particular set of syllables... so yeah... Freaky! Needless to say after about 3 or 4 more wierd apparently random and completely coincidental misshaps we discontinued use of that particular name aloud henceforth! Have fun in your campaign, you seem to have it all worked out! Peace Case

Posts: 119 Feb 4 08 4:06 PM Ghoul Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	In a previous session the party ran into a random encounter with a Jann. Not many words were exchanged and they separated ways. This session the party discovered that they had given Iskandr the water they required to use the portal! The players groaned in anguish and cursed their evil DM, but to no avail. Find some allies and fight the devil, I said. Or think of another way. One of my players decided that he wanted to go look for that Jann again. No problem, I said. After a random encounter with two ant lions, they spotted him watching them, they started talking, and eventually they agreed to pay him 1000 gp in gems if he planeshifted them and two of their camels to the City of Brass. He warned them about the distance problem, and they agreed to his terms. I let a player roll... and we got a 5x89=445 miles from the intended destination! So I placed them at the edge of the dust plain, right next to the castle of Kush. (What language was the writing in? I decided on the spot to use Infernal... Should have been Ignan, I guess.) Some reading later they leave for their long treck north at 24 miles a day... I skipped all random encounters except for a meeting with a djinn near the broken peak, warning them of the tarrasque that was supposedly living there (you should have seen their jaws drop...) and giving them a map of the plane. I basically handed them over map from the booklet. We'll see how it goes without removing the map keys. I skipped all random encounters just giving them a few sentences about seeing many air and dust mephits every day and avoiding any fights... Upon arriving at the city, they realized how long the bridge was, how long the queue was, they tried to sell the 300 doses of dried Black Lotus they had collected (and did in fact sell 250 doses for 50 gp each), and they are now thinking about Dawwad's sword. What to do do? Nobody is lawful neutral! They will probably try and sell it. But to whom? And what if the authorities discover such a dangerous weapon in the hands of such low-level primes? At first the party tries to find a Pazuzu temple and the shadow walker and the mystic theurge decide to play along with the lamb sacrifice and the chanting. To get a writ of passage the head priest asks them to join them in an ambush on a patrol by Lady Fatima Umau. The neutral and evil side of the party is tempted, but the good side is strictly against it. Pazuzu's powerful corruption is spreading, I can feel it... I then used idea no. 18 with somebody called Qasim who could "organize" a writ of passage. They then met this old man called Abdel Hasib with a white beard and some sand goggles who sold them a writ each. The take the 20 miles walk to the gatehouse (are these towers really 6 miles high?) - where they are immediately discovered as being fakes. The fire giant says the fine is 20'000 gp, or if they offer a magic item worth at least 10'000 gp he'll let them pass. They use mass invisibility and run. The fighter takes 22 points of damage as the giant strikes the invisible party, but then they all make it away from the gate without paying either the fine or the bribe. The ten fire giants and the efreet then closed the gate and rang the alarms but did not abandon their post. The party managed to use another guy as a bait to find Abdel Hasib, discover that he is in fact Qasim's slave and forced him to lead them to his master's mansion. I wasn't sure how to play the permanent suggestion of the brass collar. In a life or death situation, the slave would still try to save his life without betraying his master. I decided to use the stats for a noble efreet and four efreeti soldiers, but these proved to be unnecessary. The slave had handed the party some fake writs and a confession when confronted with the sharp end of a naginata (glaive). The party hides these away except for one, and tells Qasim that they will report his racket to Lady Fatima Umau if he does not "settle" the question with the guards and provides them with some real writs of passage. The efreet agrees because does not know where the other writs are hidden (and because having a slave ask for a Wish is out of the question). A slave will meet them in two days by the gate, with the real writs, walk with them through the gate, collect the fake writs, and return. Both sides win. Once inside I give the party a short list of names from the military bazaar in the upper city (the picture with the tank and the missile in the background elicits a chuckle or two), the party goes shopping, and then they visit the Circus of Pain. The fighter wants to build a reputation and feels that fighting in the arena would be fun. We talk about the platforms, the various challenges, until I discover that you cannot just sign up except for the races. Disappointment at the table. Hm, I hadn't read up on that and was surprised. Perhaps there will be a way to have fights and bets and brawls in the lower city. We talk about the next moves and I propose two alternatives: Discover the salamander resistance in the Samaghar Bathhouse (p. 94) and join them, doing some small missions for them, or do some missions inside Freemen's Tower (p. 96): Maybe fight the crazy druid and build a powerbase inside the tower. The party opted for "resistance" so that's what I'll prep for next session. And one of the next goals will be to kill Junyad ibn Tarriq (p. 60) and get away without being detected. I'll need a map, and some magic stuff prepared. One of these days the evil mystic theurge will also be interested in visiting the Aerie of Pazuzu (p. 58). I'll have to think about some more people that frequent this place. I hope nobody minds that I keep posting. I'm still hoping to read some reports from other groups! Need a simple Campaign Wiki?

Do you think that the pcs felt that they were in a cool place, or do you think they took it as more "just another city?" Regarding the towers, yeah, I'm sure they're supposed to be 6 miles high. Although that sounds pretty far from being realistic, don't forget that this is supposed to be a mythic place. I mean the city is like a demiplane, right? As I've stated before, I've only browsed through the books so far. I've really enjoyed what I've read. However, do you feel it lends itself well to "at the table usability?" Have you mentioned the Minaret of Screams yet? I think it "screams" every so often, if I recall correctly, and I plan on incorporating it myself as part of the background to remind folks they're in a very different city. Have you decided to incorporate any exotic weapons or items into the market? I'm still debating myself as to whether or not I'm going to make primitive firearms available in Sigil for my Anger of Angels campaign (they'll be going there long before the City of Brass.) I really think mixing Pazuzu with the City is an interesting idea. I'm really interested in seeing how that plays out. Thanks for posting, please keep this updated.

But I'm ruling that these only work on certain planes, so in actual play this will not affect my players. It just adds awesome color; I plan to have an Earth dictator with his bodyguards looking for interesting weapons the next time my players are at the military market. I also told my players that we could use the Magic Item Compendium within the City of Brass, so that made my "buy awesome stuff" player very, very happy. They totally feel that in this city, everything can be had. Sometimes I tell them that the owner of the shop is a Wiz 17 and not interested in talking to them. One of his Wiz 10 slaves will be taking care of their needs. That also impresses them as the average party level is 10 at the moment. As for the "feel" of the city, I think that the players learnt not to trust anybody. Everbody is out to cheat you, and "lawful evil" just means that both the police and the thugs are out to screw you. "Lawful" in this context means "painful punishment." I've read them a few passages of the sultan's law (no water & ice magic, what their rights are when the merchants cheat them, what consequences violence will have). I just picked a few paragraphs and inserted them into the story. A nice touch! Need a simple Campaign Wiki?

Posts: 119 Feb 19 08 3:41 AM Ghoul Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	At the beginning of the session I told the party how they had rented a suite in the Freemen's Tower. One day they spot a bathhouse. How unusual! The next day they decide to go for a bath, but are rudely sent away by the human peeping through the doorway. The party wants to look for a bar nearby. I pull the Obisidian Blade out of my hat. Inside the dark structure Fäm - the party's dragon adept - finds a sort of lizard man drinking and starts talking in draconic. He seems to be a worshipper of Set, the god of evil and the night, favorite of all evil power-seeking humanoids and assassins. They talk a bit about the shining pyramid of set floating above the city. Apparently an ambassador of Set currently resides in the city. When asked about the bathhouse, he laughs about the weaklings that dry out so quickly. Finally he points them to Essam. I quickly pulled Essam out of my hat. He's a seedy inn keeper and efreet pimp of the lower city, running his own establishment called Drunken Flower. While Nanami starts ogling Sheila the thinly veiled dancer, Kubo San, Fäm, and Saito talk to Essam with Saito doing all the translations. The Efreet suggests an evil plot: For five hundred gold he'll arrange an attack on Ephesius. The party can then "save" him and ingratiate themselves with him. They agree to this nasty trap. (Probably way too cheap! I must generate some complication to compensate for it!) The next day Ephesius is attacked by the kobolds. Too bad I didn't realize Ephesius has stats, too, and he's not a low-level commoner: He's an Adp8/Ari4, CR 11. Oh well. The party rushes towards Ephesius, saves him, is taken to his mansion for coffee, talks about the city, and being recent arrivals skilled with the blade, he invites them to see some "friends". This is when the party gets introduced to the salamander noble Aruj Khayr. They talk about the sultan being an ursuper coming from the Eye of Fire. When it struck at last, it took every efreeti fortress, offering the efreeti the choice to join him or to die. The efreet felt that Iblis had returned from hell to lead them once again! He took salamander fortresses and slaughtered them and at the very end, he cast down the gates of the City of Brass and slew Sultan Ashur Ban. His wife and her clan, the Hawanar, resisted for a little while but were all defeated eventually. Talk turns to Set, the apparent alliance of Set with the sultan, the spread of Set's influence, and finally to a secret temple of set in the lower city itself that the salamanders have heard of. They ask the party to destroy it and the party agrees. I just prepared two rooms with fights in them. The first room had several columns providing cover for rogues and I used five Black Jackals of Set (CR 8) and a Black Jackals of Set jackalwere (CR 12). That should have been an EL 14 but proved not much of challenge. The chain wielding dragon adept did not fall to their gaze attack and they failed to Hide successfully. The second room had four nagathas (CR 4) from MMIV and a spirit naga (CR 9) for an EL 10, more or less. I had hoped that maybe one or two characters would have been hit by the various poisons in the previous encounters, but no such luck. The naga was quickly dispatched after it revealed itself by casting a Fireball at the archer and the mystic theurge that had used a Dimension Door to get away from the fight. Unfortunately those two were exactly the ones that had very good protection from fire. Once visible, the spirit naga did not live long… The above based on pages 94-96 for the Heyyab district, the Samaghar Bathhouse, and the Freemen's Tower; page 258 for Ephesius stats and salamander stats; page 149 for the Black Jackal Society; pages 275-277 for the Black Jackal stats and the kobold assassin stats; page 11 for some backstory. These congratulated them on their job and offered various options: Somehow contact the secret Orcus temple in the Underbasin and discover the whereabouts of the Ashur Ban's body. Apparently it was never found. Ashur Ban was the last sultan of the City of Brass. One possible lead would be Sim ral Marla, a lich running the multitude of forges supplying most of the Sultan's army's weapons and armor. He would certainly have more information on the cult of Orcus. Use the unholy symbols of Set to gain access to the shining pyramid. Learn more about Set's plans. The Jackal lord seems to be recruiting mercenaries. Who is at the head of this temple? What are his plans? Sow discord between the Sultan's Burning Dervishes and the Temple of Set by attacking both sides in disguise. When Nanami handed in her gloves she was looking for a weapon shop run by a "good" person. No liches, no efreet, no demons… And she found Baracus. Since she went there alone, was apparently new and innocent, Baracus signaled that he might be interested in fleeing the City of Brass together with his wife Najima. Nanami, ever the neutral good character, asked what was in there for her and he offered his master piece: The frost brand greatsword. The party decides to look for the Orcus temple in the so-called Underbasin. They have practically no Gather Information skills to speak of, so they found nothing except for the basic facts. They stared at the grates into the torpid currents of excrement and waste. When a passerby spat at them and laughed that they must have had reached rock bottom to be considering the Underbasin, they intimidated him and forced him to take them to a local person of note. He took them into a brothel where the local crime lord and master of pimp was smoking Shisha. They asked for a way into the Underbasin. Kubo San joked around and offered to sell Nanami. "It's a deal," he said. No no no good sir, Kubo retracted. Finally they pay 100 gp to have a guard called Hamid guide them to the nearest grate that was out of sight. They climb down into the brown quivering mass of slow moving slime and go looking for the so-called Skull Gate. A Divination spell told them to look for a skull gate and beware its sting. They fought five wights, four chuuls, found a landing and a black gate, and a Spot check of over 30 revealed a hidden door accross the river of exrement. They examine the gate and the door with a ring of x-ray vision and some Detect Poison. It seems highly probably that the door is trapped. I had to remind them of their goals and their expectations. Breaking down the door and killing everybody was probably not a good idea. They climbed out a different hole (fighting a greater abyssal basilisk on the way) and found themselves in an old necropolis. I'm enjoying your posts, please keep them coming. Do you get the feel that your players are sharing your growing enthusiasm for the City of Brass? Some nice diabolical schemes you have brewing.

I'll add some page numbers to my previous post to show where I got the various ideas from. I think my players are enjoying the City of Brass because of the following reasons: Getting cool magic items is no problem anymore. I used to control the magic item supply by carefully checking caster level and feat requirements. The city being lawful evil is something that is very predictable. No weirdness incolving decorum, etiquette, and connections. Might makes right, as long as the authorities don't see you. It seems to appeal to my players. It's big, and thus there's a certain anonymity they are enjoying. Need a simple Campaign Wiki?
