Rulers of hell |
Lead | |
|
I have been trying to come up with a comprehensive list of the rulers of the nine hells, and their servants based published D&D sources like the Tome of Horrors, the BoVD and whatever else I can get my hands on (including some info taken from demonweb's illustrations). Most notably I have no info on the dark eight... I know they are eight powerful pitfiends, but is there a place where they are individually named and stated out?
Here are the notes I have compiled so far: |

Whoa, thanks Boz! thats a pretty comprehensive list there. I was unaware that Tiamat used to rule the first layer of hell... being an actual god you would think she could do better. I mean Asmodeus himself isn't quite a god yet.

Quote: Azazrel, "The Serpent" (DR91)
Is this the same Serpent in the Triumvirate of Balance? AO and The Lady of Pain are the other two. Also, if this is indeed the Serpent, then he is the source of Vecna's power. A creature of such amazing power should not be confined to the 1st layer... Hmm, maybe The Nameless One did something... ------------------

Re: AVERNUS | ||
|
Here is my take of the hierarchy....one level at a time. I am going to try to mesh 1e, 2e (oh the horrors) and 3e.
AVERNUS The first layer of the Nine Hell WAS ruled by Tiamat, the chromatic dragon for a while. But the Queen of Dragon was pretty soon tired of playing second fiddle to a bunch of insignificant outsiders while she has far greater plans of her own. Besides, she has more important matters to worry about other than hunting down renegade and exiled devils who is plotting against her, or making sure the demons of the Abyss wouldn't make an incursion into Avernus. Tiamat relinquished claim to Avernus, but she know it would be foolish to relinquish ALL claims to it, so she sired Zariel. It is not known who her father is, some claimed a poweful pit fiend in Tiamat's service, or even an outcast devil. In any case, the father is supposedly been devoured by Tiamat after the job was done. With Asmodeus' approval, Zariel became the ruler of the First layer of the Nine Hells...and has been so for millennia. This was done so quietly and without any major hoopla that many on the Prime didn't even realize Tiamat was no longer the ruler. But then again, Zariel was nothing more than her mother's puppet, so what is the difference? Then along came Bel. Bel was originally a servant of Dispater, commanding the Iron Guards in the archdevil's palace. Bel eventually was "re-assigned" to the Blood War front in Avernus, where he distinguished himself. So much that Zariel was impressed with him and made him one of her generals...and some claimed, her consort. That was her undoing, before long, Bel imprisoned her and set himself up as the ruler of the first layer of the Hell. Known to some now as Baal, here are some of Bel's foremost nobles (Bel is frist mentioned in Dragon #75, became a general of the Blood War in second edition Planscape, and later became one of the Lord of the Nine. Zariel is first refered to in Dargon magazine and is mentioned by name in late 2E Guide to Hell. Tiamat made her official debut in 1E MM): Amduscias - He leads 29 companies of abishai devils. He retained his position because of his experience, having served Tiamat and Zariel. Called the "Reconciliator of Foes", Amduscias is a skillful negotiator (and manipulator) and he often settle disputes between the dragons and devils of Avernus. Amduscias has several forms, one is that of a yellow skinned fiendish unicorn with a purple horn, another is that of a hawk headed man, and finally, the most dangerous, is that of a monstrous wolf with a prehensile serpent's tail. Malphas - Like Amdusicas, Malphas is a general leading 40 companies of abishai devils. He and his forces marched about enforcing Bel's will all over Avernus, as he did with Tiamat and Zariel. Bel retained him because the various lesser devils in Avernus recognize and "respect" his authority and power. Malphas sppears as a dark-skinned man dressed in black velvet robes studded by 333 gems of unearthly value. Sometimes, he would take the form of a large black crow-like bird. Goap (the pit fiend) - Goap is a pit fiend commanding 3 companies of erinyes. He manage to remain in the hierarchy by virtue of his experience. Unlike most pit fiends, Goap's wings are feathered, but that doesn't make them any less dangerous. As a legacy of his past servitude to Tiamat and Zariel, Goap wears dragonhide armor (made from the skins of consorts whom displeased Tiamat) and a mace which can shoots jets of frost, fire, acid, lightning, and poison gas. Vual - the camel headed duke of pleasure considered himself as an independent duke rather than a servant of Bel's. But since he is based on Avernus and under Asmodeus' orders, he is forced to obey whenever Bel comes calling. Malgrin - Called the Duke of Unlife, this general of Bel commands an army of undead, supposedly more loyal and less troublesome than any diabolic armies composed of backstabbing scheming devils. Malgrin takes the form of a enormous skeletal being with huge curving horns and a long bony tail. (Both Vual an Malgrin are from Legions of Hell) Malarea - This former outcast devil was exiled because of her temperament whch costed her a consortship in the hierarchy. But she became the perfect consort to the warlike Bel, who enjoys a mate who is as wild and violent as he is. As Bel is busy with the Blood War and the security of Avernus (and thus the Hells), Malarea sees to it that his court of nobles will not do to him with he has done to Zariel. NEXT: Dis (Dispater, Lilis, Bitru, Elivisa and others) "You know I'm unloveable...you don't have to tell me. Oh message received loud and clear, loud and clear."

Nice work Demonweb... can't wait for more. And a big thanks to all of you for helping me figure out the complicated politics of hell... almost makes me want to start a campaign where each player gets to pick an prince or arch-devil to play (asmodeus being off limits of course) and watching them plot, scheme and betray one-another and the other demonic NPCs while viying for power with armies of demons at their command.

Re: DIS | ||
|
DIS Part one
For as far as anyone who can remember, the second layer is ruled by Dispater, there was no other known archdevil who preceded him, which is just as well. Dispater's name literally translated as "Father of Dis", leading some to conjecture that he and the layer are one. Even the name Dis would be refer to the layer and its ruler. Dis rule the layer from his Iron Tower located in the center of the Iron City. The Tower can be seen from every point in the city. Dispater is a cautious devil, who is one of the reasons for his success and longevity. He is slow to act and when he does it is with devastating results to his enemies. Dis rarely leave the Iron Tower, and when he does, it is usually for a very good reason, like his annual visit to Asmodeus' court. Even then he do not go alone, bringing his bodyguard and avenger Arioch with him. Being such an insulated ruler, Dis surronded himself with a surprisingly loyal and efficient court, who contributed to his success and hold of the layer. LILIS - Dispater may not want to have anything to do with anything outside his Iron Tower but he cannot afford to ignore vital information which may expand his power, or to defend him from his archdevil rivals. This is where Lilis steps in. As old as Dis himself, Lilis is the only consort anybody recall Disapter having. Lilis maintains a network of spies and informants throughout the Hells and the planes that is said to be second only to those of Asmodeus, thus she kept Dis well informed of what is going on in the outside world. Lilis takes the form of a middle aged she-devil with typical diabolic features (bat-like wings, horns, hooves, forked tail). Her hair is copper in color. She has green eyes, red-orange horns and skin. Her hooves, long nails and wings are black. ARIOCH - Arioch serves Dispater as avenger and bodyguard. He metes out punishment to all those who displease or anger Dispater. And when Dispater HAVE to leave the Iron Tower, Arioch is always there by his side, to cut down anyone who might threaten the archdevil. Arioch appears as a purple-skinned humanoid with diabolic features, except his head resembled a lion-maned crocodile and his skin lighten to wine red from the shoulders up. TITIVILUS - Titivilus is Dispater's nuncio. He acts as Dispater's herald and messenger. A visit from Titivilus is a visit from Dis himself, thus most archdevils are forced to paid him respect, even tolerating his sarcastic and cutting remarks, for which he is well known for. Titivilus appears as a bat-winged man with the legs similar to that of a satyr's. BIFFANT - A portly devil with diabolic features (except his tail is tufted), Biffant has green eyes, red skin, inward curving horns, and curiously, a permenant smile etched on his face. Biffant serves Dispater as provost, running the affairs of the palace, from its staff, and with Bel and Baalzephon gone, its troops. Although no outside attack have ever penetrated as far as the Iron Palace itself, much less the Tower, nevertheless, Biffant makes sure that such an event will never occur. BITRU - Appearing as a red-skinned, handsome devil with diabolic features, Bitru is the strongest of Dispater's general, in terms of physical, political and military power. From his vast estate, Bitru commands 70 legions of wild erinyes warriors. It is obvious that Dis favors (or fears) him, for Bitru is one of the few dukes who have a consort and she is Elivisa, the daughter of Dis himself. However some sees Elivisa is merely keeping an eye on Bitru, to make sure he keep his ambitions in check. ELIVISA - Known as the Daughter of Dis and the Iron Maiden, Elivisa appears as a beautiful erinyes with hooves, forked tail, horns, maroon skin, orange hair and feathered wings which seems to change color as she wills. She is the consort to the Duke Bitru and is said by some to keep an eye on him, ever is Dispater's paranoid ways. (Elivisa is a creation of mine. I was inspired by the term "Devil's Daughter" and created a bunch of unique she-devils whose parents are the Archdevils and their respective consorts. Collectively known as the "Diabolic Princesses", Glasya and Fierna are part of this "sorority". As for the name itself, I found it in a book of witchcraft. It was used in an incantation (along with a host of other names) to summon one of the more powerful inhabitants from the infernal regions. There is no mythological description of Elivisa. But the name is quite popular; do a search of it and you will see it pop up in many sites.) Next: Dis part 2 (Baalzephon, Merodach, Furcas and others) "You know I'm unloveable...you don't have to tell me. Oh message received loud and clear, loud and clear."

Re: DIS | ||

DIS Part 2
Baalzephon (the pit fiend) - This female pit fiend served Dispater as Prime Minister, administering and ordering the Lord of the Iron City's armies. Asmodeus saw her skill in defending Dis from outside attacks and elevated her into the Dark 8, where she became in charge of supply, making sure the armies of the Hells will be adequately armed against the hordes from the Abyss. Baalzephon had went on to become one of the Dark 8's most prominent members. In appearance, Baalzephon appears amazingly human: her body, rather thah big and bulky like most pit fiends, is slim and curvaceous. But this doesn't make her any less dangerous. Merodach - This duke of Dis leads 29 companies of bearded devils in battle. The least of Dispater's duke in terms of personal power and influence, Merodach is also viewed as a buffoon and the mention of his name often conjures up snorts of derision from other members of Dispater's court. Merodach appears as a wolf with a diabolical human-like head with long spiraling longhorns. He has feathered wings but can fly only clumsily. He also has a prehensile serpent-like tail. Furcas - Furcas originally served Dispater as a pit fiend noble, leading 12 companies of bearded devils. He was promoted to the Dark 8 and became in charge of Mortal Relations. His true talent came out and he became one of the most powerful of the Dark 8. Furcas lured many mortals into the service of the diabolic in their Blood War against the demons of the Abyss. Figuring Furcas' talent can benefit him, Dispater lured him back into his service with the offer of a new unique form, and a title: Duke of Rhetoric. Furcas accepted and is now in charge of the Forbidden Library in the Iron City. He shed his old pit fiend form to that of a tall diabolic humanoid with long sharp horns. Alocer - Alocer appears as a red-gold skinned humanoid with a leonine head. He is often seen dressed in full plate armor, riding a nightmare into battle. As a general of Dis, he leads 36 companies of erinyes warriors. Bel - Now one of the Lords of the Nine, Bel originally served Disapter as a pit fiend, in charge of the Iron Guard, an elite squad of horned devils who are the security forces of the Iron Palace. Bel's tenure ended when he was offered a position to the Blood War front, which he readily accepted. Next: Minauros (Mammon, Focalor, Glasya and others) "You know I'm unloveable...you don't have to tell me. Oh message received loud and clear, loud and clear."

Re: Minauros | ||

MINAUROS
The third layer of Hell is ruled by Mammon, the Lord of Avarice, a fat and bloated devil who was forced to assume a new form by Asmodeus after the Reckoning. Glasya - For a while, Glasya, daughter of Asmodeus himself, was Mammon's chief consort (implying he has several others in the sidelines...in fact, he has nine total, each ranked according to their current favor with him, and Glasya is invariably his number one). Being Asmodeus own daughter, Glasya's safety and well being was constantly being watched over Focalor, Mammon's seneschal. The fact that Mammon opposes Asmodeus politically didn't help matters much. After the Reckoning, Asmodeus reined her in and sent her packing from Mammon's court and back to Nessus. Glasya is an incredibly beautiful she-devil, with long dark red hair, copper colored skin, bat wings and forked tail. Focalor - Mammon, greedy slob that he is, spent most of his time counting the baubles in his palace, so most of the affairs of the palace and the layer itself is taken care of by his seneschal, Focalor. Mammon may rule Minauros, but it is really Focalor who wields the real power. With weird pink-green skin and slim in built, Focalor appears as typical diabolic humanoid devil with feathered wings, He wears an iron gauntlet which is also his badge of office. Bael- Appearing as a bronze armor wearing humanoid topped with a head with bovine creatures, Bael is Mammon's strongest general, leading 66 companies of barbed devils. Zimimar (the pit fiend) - this female pit fiend once served Mammon as commander of his palace guard: 6 companies of bone devils, and was traveling all over Minauros and the planes enforcing his will. She remained loyal to Asmodeus during the Reckoning and was recruited into the Dark 8, in charge of morale. From her years of servitude to Mammon, Zimimar is a sickly green in appearance, it is said not a mere touch from her causes terrible diseases. Caarcrinolaas - Now serving Belial under the name Baaphel, Caarcrinolaas switched over the Belial's service after Mammon so embarassingly abased himself in front of Asmodeus after the Reckoning. Gorson - Now known as the Blood Duke, Gorson served Geryon as bailiff. In that capacity, like Focalor, he watched over Geryon's interests in the Hells and elsewhere....but secretly he really want to tear creatures apart. After Geryon was deposed, most of the Wild Beast's court either remain loyal to him, or defect to other dukes, which Gorson did. He now serves Mammon (thus replacing Baaphel/Caarcrinolaas) by leading 60 companies of barbded devils. His former form is a yellow skinned man with diabolic features with the tail of a lion. His new form took that one step further....he now has a devilish upper torso on the body of a monstrous lion. Melchon - Melchon is a duke leading 18 companies of erinyes warrior on Mammon's behalf. He appears as a red-skinned, bull-horned diabolic humanoid with a poisonous stinger at the end of his tail. He is a synchophantic duke who Focalor thinks is a pathetic excuse of a duke in the hierarchy. Eslevor - Eslevor is a she-devil with typical diabolic features with long yellow hair and pale pink skin with an odd metallic sheen to it. She is now Mammon's current number one consort, after Glasya's departure. (Mammon tried to woo the elusive she-devil Duskur in Avernus but she couldn't be found, not that she would accept his proposal anyway). As usual, Mammon's other lesser consorts conspire and scheme for her position. NEXT: Phlegethos (Belial and his devil women) "You know I'm unloveable...you don't have to tell me. Oh message received loud and clear, loud and clear."

The fiery fourth circle of Hell is currently ruled by a she-devil called Fierna. At least in name only. Fierna is the beautiful yet deadly daughter of the arch-devil Belial, himself said to be the most handsome of the Arch-devils. Belial himself ruled Phlegethos until The Reckoning. He voluntarily stepped down from power and set his daughter up on the throne. But in reality, it is he who wields the real power. Belial is seen as a patron of pain, trickery, fire, and seduction....which is apt, for this fiend supposedly had his way with his own daughter, and has a large number of female nobles in his court. The current nobles in the court of Fierna, really, in essence also serves Belial. Naome - this female devil is the consort of the arch-devil Belial and the mother to Fierna herself. As Belial stepped down from rulership, Naome remain his consort, and as a highly effective advisor and diplomat to Fierna. Naome appears as a beautiful she-devil of indeterminate age with long brown hair, horns, hooves, forked tail, long red nails, and a scarlet body. Her head and shoulds and her hands, however, are of human flesh color. Gazra (the pit fiend) - responsible for a huge army stationed here in case an incursion should ever delve this deeply in the Hells, Gazra, after the Reckoning, became a general and consort to Fierna. Chamo - Chamo served Belial as legate and had for a while planned to supplant his master. However, Fierna had no use for him in her court, so Chamo remained legate to Belial, and although it is Belial who holds the real power in Phlegethos, the throne is in Fierna's grasp. Thus Chamo is frustrated more than ever. Chamo is a devil with typical diabolic features with white hair and brown eyes. He has huge wings and his skin is red, except for his hands, which darkened to blue. Balan - After the Reckoning, Balan, who served Belial by leading 40 companies of bearded devils, underwent a transformation, now appearing as a tri-headed monstrosity: he had two extra heads, one of a bull and one of a ram. Balan is now the Master of the Infernal Hunt, organizing hunts for Fierna and Belial. Bathym - Known as the Black Duke for his penchant of wearing jet black armor (and thus concealing his embarrassing forked pig-like tail), Bathym serves Fierna leading 30 companies of barbed devils. Gaziel - appearing as a blood-red skeletal creature with a white skull-like head, Gaziel serves Fierna by leading 11 companies of bone devils. Zaebos the pit fiend - Zaebos served Belial before the Reckoning as his lieutenant, a sort of intermediary between the Arch-devil and his dukes who rules in outlying estates. He has since been promoted into the Dark 8. He is in charge of Promotions and Demotions among the Blood War forces. Zapan the pit fiend - Zapan, before the Reckoning, served Belial by leading 4 companies of horned devils, the elite defenders of the palace Abriymoch (The Mount of Leaping Flames, which was a dead volcano, which became monstrously alive again after The Reckoning). He has since been promoted into the ranks of the Dark 8, being in charge of Immortal Relations. Antaia the Witch Queen - This hauntingly beautfiul yet malevolent she-devil serves Fierna and Belial. Unlike most of the dukes who leads armies and/or take care of the things that needed to be done to maintain the security of the palace, Antaia spends her attention focused on the prime. Her primary goal is to turn mortals away from the worship of the gods to to the worship of her. When these mortals die, their souls will come directly to Phlegethos, enlarging the armies of Fierna and her father. Naamah the Contessa of Duplicity - Originally a celestial herself (and it is rumoured that Belial himself was a fallen celestial, as was Baalzebul), Naamah's fall transformed her from a beautiful and majestic winged creature to a hideous snake bodied she-fiend with five heads. Naamah came to serve Belial, and now Fierna, as a seductress and corruptor. Baaphel - This gray furred dog-headed devil with batwings, forked tail and hooves serves Fierna by leading 24 companies of bearded devil. Also known as Caarcrinolaas, Baaphel was thoroughly disgusted, if not embarrassed by Mammon's supplication at Asmodeus' feet after The Reckoning, and went to serve a more deserving liege, Belial. Shortly after, Belial step down from power and now Fierna is technically his master. Neolma - this orange skinned she-devil has typical diabolic features. She is supposedly the sister of Naome and she was Belial's consort before Naome supplanted her. Neolma would have been exiled to Avernus had Chamo not stepped in and suggested that Neolma becomes Bathym's consort. Chamo was hoping to use her in a scheme to eventually overthrow Belial....with The Reckoning, Chamo basically have to abandon that plan and hatch a new scheme. Just a question: Why are there forces so small and few?
I know, these numbers are from official suplements, but they just don't make any sense. I mean each individual layer is infinite -> thus each layer has an infinite number of citizens. Even if there's only one devil per x,000,000,000,000 square miles, there are infinite devils in each hell (since infinite/any number = still infinite) Thus if even only 0,0000000000[...]1% of the devils in a hell are in military service, their armies should still consist of an infinite number of soldiers in an infinite number of companies. The question how to give orders through an unlimited realm with infinite cities, infinite miles apart not even asked. |

Being a mere mortal you cannot comprehend the intricate workings of the Hells. So leave it at that!

5. Stygia
The frozen ocean that is the layer of Stygia have a tumultous history. The layer was originally ruled by an entity called Levistus, known in certain circles as Leviathan. Some believe that Leviathan is a colossal sea monster and that the depths of Stygia served as its prison. The arch-devil known as Levistus is simply a manifestation, or an avatar of sorts, of Leviathan itself. Thus Leviathan is imprisoned but aware. When the Queen of Hell, Bensozia and her bodyguard of 6 pit fiends traveled through Stygia, Levistus tried to convert her to his cause and betray Asmodeus. When she refused, he killed her and her bodyguards. It didn't take long for Asmodeus to find out about the deed. For someone of Asmodeus' powers, it was a simple spell to bring Bensozia back, but no one would dare brag about laying hands on Asmodeus' consort and go unpunished. (Given that Bensozia is alive when Geryon rules Stygia, I assume that Asmodeus simply brought her back) Asmodeus forced Leviathan into a deep slumber from which he would only awake when the Great Devil himself wills it. The members of the now imprisoned AND unaware devil's court are either exiled, or retain to serve a new master, Geryon. Geryon became ruler of Stygia for several millennia until The Reckoning. He was the only arch-devil who was loyal to Asmodeus, and ironically, he was deposed from rulership for his loyalty. Most of his court were either remain loyal to him, or defected to other arch-devils. Asmodeus gave Leviathan back the rulership of Stygia...so he awoke the great sea monster. But even THEN, the avatar the monster manifests is imprisoned within a block of ice, so he must rely on his agents and nobles to carry out his will and maintain order in Stygia. The Fate of Geryon's Court Cozbi - Also known as Cozbinaer, this green-haired, white skinned she-devil was exquisitely beautiful, with a pink torso which deepen to red from the waist down. However, when the court was in exile in Avernus for a while, they came into conflict with many other exiles and viler beings and Cozbi was horribly wounded and scarred. She now appeared as a withered and horrifying harridan, kept alive by vile magic and twisted technology when she should have died. Amon - Known as the Wolf, this wolf-headed duke was Geryon's foremost general, leading 40 companies of bone devils. He remained loyal to Geryon, and along with Cozbi, is in exiled with Geryon in the Coldsteel Palace hidden in a secret location in Stygia. Gorson - Once Geryon's bailiff, Gorson now serves Mammon as The Blood Duke. Herodias - A treacherous duke, Herodias served Geryon as magistrate, he is responsible for the security of the realm and training of the armies of Stygia. A large and portly scarlet skinned devil with diabolic features, Herodias turned away from Geryon and served Leviathan/Levistus. That came to a crashing end with Belial invaded and while Herodias' generals bickered, the duke known as Dagon repelled the invasion. Herodias is currently being slowly digested in Leviathan's bowels.... Agares - Appearing as a quivering old man with the legs and tails of a crocodile, Agares was a duke leading 31 companies of bone devils. He was destroyed during the court's exile in Avernus. Machalas - Appearing as a ebony scaled bat-headed horned devil, Machalas led 11 companies of barbed devil. Like Agares, he also met his end on Avernus. Fecor the pit fiend - He commanded 8 companies of horned devil. Like Agares and Machalas, he is destroyed. LEVISTUS' COURT Dagon - Little is known about this noble except that he is the Warden of the Stygian Depths. Sharing his name with a demon prince of great power, and a Avernus exile, Dagon became Levistus' chief noble when he repelled an invasion by Belial. Given its current status where its own avatar cannot be freed to act, Leviathan relied on loyal nobles (and other minions) to maintain its rule than most of the other arch-devils. To ensure that its court will be more loyal than most, Leviathan sent its minions to recruit various exiled devils from Avernus. They include: Rumjal - Rumjal served Geryon as lieutenant until he started making advances toward his consort Cozbi. One rule in the Hells that is strictly enforced is that absolutely no one, touches the consort of a duke, much less an arch-devil upon pain of exile, imprisonment, or outright destruction. Rumjal was exiled to Avernus. When Levistus returned to power, Rumjal was called back to serve, since he had experience in running the affairs in Stygia. Kochbiel - Once marshal to the devil Beherit (supposedly destroyed along with his consort Batna), Kochbiel was exiled because the other archdevils hold a grudge against him for his military success. This happened when Geryon was in power in Stygia. Leviathan figures Kochbiel's contempt of the other arch-devils will work in its favor and thus recruited him. Jezebeth - Said to have been the daughter of Beherit and Batna, Jezebeth is Leviathan's current consort. Originally, Leviathan had agents seek out the elusive she-devil Duskur but that came to naught. Its sight landed on the she-devil Bist but she rebuked its agents. Leviathan's agents eventually located Jezebeth, in Acheron. So like Kochbiel, Levithan hopes to use Jezebeth's hatred of Asmodeus for destroying her parents to its advantage. Jezebeth is a chimerical she-devil, she has one batlike wing and one wing feathered like a bird. Her right leg is hooved, but her left one ends in the feet of a monstrous bird of prey. Other than these and her pale red skin, Jezebeth resembles a beautiful human female. Nekhet - this bat-headed she-devil believed that she is the daughter of the god Set, who have a realm in Stygia. Nekhet commands the courthern and eastern approaches to Set's realm and spend most of her time on the Prime, setting up cults in dedication to Set. In doing so, she hopes that Set will honor her with true godhood. Levithan is not happy with her at the moment as she is neglecting her duties. But the fact that she MAY be Set's daughter kept the monstrous devil from devouring her as it did with Herodias. Krotep - This weird devil had his left hand replaced with a crab's claw by Leviathan as a reminder of who his real master is. Krotep is Nekhet's brother, and like her, he believe Set is his father. He controls the northern and western approach to Set's realm and believes the god will honor him with true godhood if he paid enough tributes to him....by building pyramids and pyramids of ice. "You know I'm unloveable...you don't have to tell me. Oh message received loud and clear, loud and clear."

If anyone is interested, the official history of Bel came to Avernus is told in the Planescape supplement Hellbound The Blood War.
He was assigned to the front as reward for a long undercover mission, where he faked betrayal and fought side by side with the tanar'ri for more than a year, only to ultimately lead them into a trap, crushing a decade and more of war plans of the demons. |
