Thanks to this thread, it's the new Dinosaur Jr. album "Farm." Very good. It's like the early 90's once more. A lot of time has passed since their last release, but you can't tell by listening to this.

Thanks for the Black Crowes opinion, Sir Clarence. I really enjoy their first 3 albums, but I lost faith with the drug- addled release of "Three Snakes and One Charm" (or whatever that one was called) and haven't picked up anything else by them since.

The Black Crowes - Before The Frost

The surprise album of the year for me so far. The Black Crowes are a band that I had forgotten about because of the boringly bad stuff that they had released over the past years. This one here sounds as powerful and fresh as their first three albums. Great 70s blues rock!

Dandy Warhols, Earth to the Dandy Warhols. I've had it for a year, but only decided this week that I liked it. Probably helps that I haven't listened to my all-time favorite DW album (Thirteen Tales) in a while; Earth to ... is quite different in style and sound than Thirteen Tales.

also Darker My Love, 2. Excellent drone rock.

Letters to Cleo "Aurora Gory Alice." A mid 90's alternative rock group with a female lead singer. Very much guitar driven, maybe think a less skanky Hole or a more mainstream Breeders. A good album, the standout cut being "Here & Now."

Gov't Mule - By A Thread

Great new album by The Mule, who sound as powerful as ever and also have a new bass player who sounds a lot like the late Allen Woody and who perfectly fits into the band. Much recommended.

Skin and Bones by Foo Fighters.
It's got one of my favourite tracks 'Walking After You'. This is indelibly linked in my mind with the X-Files movie (Fight the Future) and is just wonderful.

Wolfmother - Cosmic Egg

A somewhat disappointing album that lacks the raw power of their debut. It's professionally produced, features two guitars now and sounds very much aimed for the mass market and the big money. A pity.

Paul Westerberg "Stereo", a 2 cd set. Pretty lo-fi production, and on some songs when he figured the song should end it just stops abruptly, which is a bit jarring. It makes you appreciate the tradition of the fade-out. Nevertheless, it's a strong release that I haven't listened to for far too long.

A collection of Simon and garfunkel. All five LPs from the 60s and a DVD of the 1981 concert in Centrel Park. Wonderful.

Now it's Dusty Springfield "Dusty in Memphis." A really good album that I haven't listened to for an age. I'll have to port it to the Ipod pronto.

The Grateful Dead "Built to Last", their final studio album. Pretty good stuff overall, with a couple really weak tracks that I'll leave off when I port it to the Ipod. My fav song from it by far is "Picasso Moon."

Sonic Youth "Bad Moon Rising". Getting into the Halloween music, and this is probably my top choice. Their album "Evol" is also quite dark and spooky sounding overall and is a good runner up. Maybe I'll listen to Godsmack or Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" next.

Django Reinhardt "Djangology". Picked this up while I did a mini-cd buying spree at a Barnes & Noble's a couple of weeks ago. It was so cool being in a store that has a good selection of music again. Now that Best Buy has hacked their selection down to almost nothing I don't have any good places to buy music locally anymore.
